New Products from Digimation!
Digimation is pleased to announce two new 3D Studio training tapes by Michele
Bousquet, author of the 3D Studio Tips & Tricks Series.
Character Animation Basics covers all the fundamentals of character animation
in 3D Studio. You'll learn about character design, storyboarding, walk cycles
and panning backgrounds. You'll also learn techniques like exaggeration and
anticipation to bring character animation alive.
Character Animation Techniques covers more advanced topics. You'll learn how to
create and work with morph targets in 3D Studio including how to manipulate the
object transform to make your morphs work the way they should. This tape also
covers timing, Inverse Kinematics, Bones Pro and lip synch for 3D Studio.
This two-tape set is designed to comprise a complete course in character
animation with 3D Studio. These exercise-oriented tapes each come with a
diskette and booklet.
The tapes will be available starting February 15. Price approximately $69.95
each. Final price will be announced February 15.
For more info call Digimation at 1-800-854-4496.

Oh no, yet another dongle. [G] Sounds great I'll have to pick them up. Do most
of the tutorials use Bones Pro?
>>Do most of the tutorials use Bones Pro?
No. For reasons I'm sure you can imagine, we had to assume the viewer didn't
have Bones Pro. BUT, the majority of the material is techniques-oriented, such
as how to figure out which positions the character should move through, how to
work with the timing, etc. These concepts are independent of the method used to
pose the character at the appropriate keyframes.
There is a short section on Bones Pro at the end of the second tape, but it's
more to introduce Bones Pro to the uninitiated, as it IS the best way to do
character animation.
Do you have Bones Pro yet?

>>exercise-oriented tapes…
Michele? Exercise videos? Just like Jane Fonda?
Will you upload some flics showing some of the results we can expect from this
course?

>>exercise-oriented tapes…
I thought of a whole bunch of really bad puns to answer you with ("Now roll
your body into a helix, that's right…" "And BEND and TAPER and BEND and
TAPER…") but I decided to preserve my dignity. <g>
In a few days I actually will upload a few flics from the videos. But I'm
afraid they show 3D characters hopping around, not me. That's something to
think about though — perhaps I can make a few bucks on the side at the next
SIGGRAPH with private exercise demonstrations.

>>upload flics…
Great! (What I really should have written was, "Seriously, though, will you
upload…") I'm much more interested in the mesh hopping. I'd like to see the
type of animation I might expect to learn from the tapes.
BTW, I like what Dolly Parton once said about exercise videos, something about
how she loves to sit on the couch and eat cookies while watching the tapes.

Don't know about that yet. Of course, if you tell me you're gonna be selling
copies of your exercise videos there, I'll start bugging my supervisor for
SIGGRAPH money _EXTRY_ hard! 😀

<ggggg> So THAT'S how you do it!!

Michele,
I am glad that you have made new tapes for character animation. I was going
through the examples in your book : Morphing and Animation. What are the major
differences or additions that your tape, disk, booklet will cover? Will your
disks ( along with the tape ) have the finished models of the examples used?
In your Glass & Reflection book, example 12, the background for the ORB always
shows a little of the original blue around the edges on my screen, even I
enlarged the backdrop box for the Jupiter SI material and did a region fit. I
wonder how to get rid of the that?
On page 106, you suggested animated background with also animated ORB and
water. Does this require a animated mattes( at least for the water if the ORB
does not move in space )? Any further help on this is a[ppreciated.
Thanks again for the nice books you published.
