<<As for a modem, well yes I do have a 28.8 ->> Well, I don't think they get any better than that. To "one-up" yourself you'll probably have to wait for the next generation modems or go to ISDN. <<but doesnt seem very reliable (irq conflicts>> I haven't run into irq conflicts, but for external types, I've seen the right UART chip on the serial port make a big difference. (16xxx series vs. the 8xxx UARTs) <<I understand that there is a way to script things?>> You're ahead of me on this one. I don't know how to customize CIS, but I'd be interested to know more… << ASOFT is what I wanted. So I am here.>> Way cool. <<CDK and Virtual Reality period in Dallas seems to be scarce.>> There are pockets of activity all over, but I don't detect a tidal wave of activity in most locations. It's interesting, but many PC game designers are now starting to embrace real-time interactive 3D for their next gen. of titles. They may not be using term VR, but short of exotic HW, that's exactly what they're doing. Things are starting to blend in some rather interesting ways. Stay tuned!

Yes, I personally do not like the way they are blurring the picture of what is real virtual reality, and what is not. I suppose I should tell you exactly where I would like to go… I would like to in time start my own company that does actually a few things such as the arch walkthrus, a real virtual reality mud, and do animations for companies/small businesses. I know that is a very broad spectrum and perhaps I will fine tune it more, but I go at a rather different pace than most people do 🙂 Does this seem like a feasible dream/goal? I am a firm believer in: If you do not know where you are going… you will never get there. – Wade

<<I would like to in time start my own company that does actually a few things such as the arch walkthrus, a real virtual reality mud, and do animations for companies/small businesses. Does this seem like a feasible dream/goal?>> Absolutely. The technology offers some very real benefits and is moving so quickly that most business people can't keep up with it. I think it's roughly analogous to where the CAD industry was 10 years ago. Back then, many companies looked for the very specialized skills required to help them make the transition to CAD externally. Today, alot of these same companies are trying to make a similar transition to 3D design. Immersive VR systems will continue to attract a following. But, I think there will also be alot of action around desktop VR- especially where it fits right into the evolution of the design process. <<If you do not know where you are going… you will never get there.>> Well said! -KY

So, I am going in the right direction? Which is to find some 3d studio training and teach myself CDK? Any tips on the business side? Any tips period I could use 🙂 – Wade

<<So, I am going in the right direction? Which is to find some 3d studio training and teach myself CDK?>> I really think so. In fact, I just had a conversation with Angela Pate this morning (from MicronGreen) who is also very active in the CDK section. She and I were lamenting the idea that 3D modeling is really the fuel that will drive VR. Of course, as far as VR is concerned, not all models are created equally. To run fast, models need to be constructed with an eye toward efficiency. Judicious use of polygons, textures and light sources for example. This type of awareness is hard to find. Certainly the game people know these angles very well. But the CAD folks…I don't think so. << Any tips on the business side?>> My advice would be to evaluate your strengths and focus on an angle you're really interested in. It could be games, it could be CAD, it could even be medical simulation. <<Any tips period I could use :)>> Yeah, kick me off the soap box, quick! BTW- MicronGreen has a demo of their NavFlyer you can download from the "SW Dev. Kit" library section. -K

Hi Kevin, <<<I really think so. In fact, I just had a conversation with Angela Pate this morning (from MicronGreen) who is also very active in the CDK section. She and I were lamenting the idea that 3D modeling is really the fuel that will drive VR. <<< So… How about we publically challenge all those 3D Studio modelers out there to a low polygon modeling contest? What do you think. The best model under 1000 polygons wins. I will contribute prizes, can you? How about it? Just an idea……… >>>This type of awareness is hard to find. (My dealer promo stuff lately says, If you stock it, they will come…. <GG> I cracked up.) Have I told you lately that I love you ……… (oh no ,,, another song…..) I am so glad your here now….and helping to spread the ideas…….. Thanks Angela

Hi Paul: <<I agree! You'll need to work out some commercialization concerns though.>> By commercialization concerns, are you referring to the creators legal rights to the use of models submitted? BTW- do you think we'd be successful in getting people to participate? -Kevin

Hi Kevin, >> By commercialization concerns, are you referring to the creators legal rights to the use of models submitted? << Did you catch the requests by user groups (Dr. Pixel's was one) for meshes for contests? Quite the high volume of criticism, and unclear motives from Dr. Pixel in the original posting. His contest called for losing rights to contributions… There was also quite a bit said about rights/commercialization in the StudioCity section about a month ago. Just trying to warn you ahead of time that many people will question your/Angela's motives for a contest. You'll definitely need to come up with some well thought out ideas concerning these kinds of issues. I myself can't help much in this area at this time. >> BTW- do you think we'd be successful in getting people to participate? << I suppose it depends on the ideas you come up with, concerning rights, useage, etc. I'm sure many of us are interested to see what CDK apps can do now and in the future. Also, if you do draft an announcment, post a copy outside of CDK, like in Take 5/Want Ads. Good luck! Paul S.

Hi Paul, Good to see you here! I know that commercialization concerns are a big subject with many folks. But I also feel that such a contest would certainly help a lot of people (granted, me included) to learn about such modeling considerations. It seems a shame to not offer such a contest because of the fear of the kind of feedback Dr. Pixel went through. I don't think we should have an entry fee, as they did and I don't think that we want to sell the winning model on any CD or anywhere else. My personal feeling is that it should be contributed freely and dispersed freely to anyone that is interested in seeing it, with full credits to the creator, of course. If this is plainly stated up front, then anyone who does not like this arrangement should be free to NOT submit an entry, don't you think? But the rest of the world, who still wants to play, should be able to do so too. It is still a free world. At least that is my two cents. And what I propose to do. Perhaps Kevin could check out the official legal line from the Autodesk perspective that could tell us if such an approach is acceptable. What do you think Kevin, if/when you read this? Paul, keep up the great work on SC2000! I sure am glad one of the original 3 organizers is still around. What happened to Kevin G. and Sanford? Where did they go and why? I still don't understand these complex things. I guess I am just a simple person…….. Anyway, keep up the great work and count me in 100%. I have a contribution that will be up soon of a real-time city to fly. And I really look forward to your feedback. Angela

"Does this seem a feasible dream/goal?" Yeah!! Go for it. This is the start of a new entrepeneurial era. The equivalent of the Industrial Revolution and the Agricultural Revolution rolled into one. The opportunity of the decade to build something from scratch with a real future. From the spec, CDK2 looks a good place to start.

You have no idea what music this is to my eyes. Dream on and prosper!!……………………. Good Luck and if I can help in any way please let me know. And please help us to promote the idea of economical modeling… It is the MOST crucial aspect of making this thing work without waiting five years for the hardware to catch up. It is a great challenge to all modelers and I know 3D Studio artist can blow the world away if we can just convince them to try, that is really is worth it. Stay tuned….. Angela

Hmm Done a little readin about you Angela… seems you are a star at Microngreen? (spell that right?) and this company has a program called umm NAVFlyer? Well I have seen the 3ds 4.0 demo tape, I have seen 3ds 3.0 run and some things it can do… I am hooked to it as well as CDK. So now I am sitting here wondering how the heck a small timer like myself can come up with the lump sum to buy 3DS 4.0 (it is a lump sum to me 🙂 cuz I am fresh out of college) Anyways, so now I know about you 🙂 Later for now Wade

Okay, so tell me the best route to take in 3DS. I am already trying to teach myself what I can about CDK, but currently waiting for the new version (that Kevin really helped speed things up with). But lemme see I would *ASSUME* that I get some training in it *THEN* go buy it? (Because I have seen training programs that offer discounts to the program once you get the training?) If not, and I would be better off purchasing 3DS – do you (or anyone) know any place that I might could like pay installments of ? *blush* As I have said, I am just out of college so money is not something I can come with so easily. One last thing… what is this Navflyer program I have read about somewhere. Wade

Hi Wade, I have gotten a few messages from you without responding so this is for all of them at once. <g> <<<So you have any advice for me?>>>> Think positive and go for it. Learn 3D Studio and model in low polygon counts. >>>>Okay, so tell me the best route to take in 3DS. I am already trying to teach myself what I can about CDK, but currently waiting for the new version (that Kevin really helped speed things up with). <<<< Boy, I am sure not the best person on this Forum to ask about the best path to learning 3D Studio, although I have taught it at the local community college for a couple of years. You should post a message asking direction in the Take 5 section or maybe in Education issues. I know that NAAUG has some courses availble online you might want to check out. Sysops, can you direct him to NAAUG? Whichever direction you go, it will be a great experience. 3D Studio is wonderful. I remember when I first heard of it, prior to Rel 1, and thought, finally, the world is coming around! We had been using Topas for several years with AutoCAD and went through major evolutions of getting it all to jive. When Autodesk entered multimedia, life changed, again…. Then they entered Cyberspace. And the world is slowly coming around again…and life is changing again…. Will it ever stand still? As my 9 year old would say…. naaauuught. <<<<If not, and I would be better off purchasing 3DS – do you (or anyone) know any place that I might could like pay installments of ? *blush*<<<<< As a dealer, I would really love to say you could buy it off in installments from me. Or even trade you some world building for it, my real goal with those who can't afford it yet. But unfortunately I can't do it today. Everything I have is stretched to (beyond) the limit in trying to persue all this new stuff. Perhaps some higher volume dealers could do so, but then I doubt if they would. You never know though, multimedia types can always surprise you.. To all multimedia dealers out there : anybody out there able to help this guy? Someday I will be able to do my bit to help turn the world onto this technology. It is in my dreams and plans. It is just not yet here. <<<<One last thing… what is this Navflyer program I have read about somewhere.<<<<< NAVFlyer is available in the CDK section of this forum, NAVFLY.ZIP. New version available soon. Watch for announcement here and maybe in the Want ADS. It is a CDK based flyer that reads in DXF files and navigates from the keypad only (the shareware version). Registered users get mouse flying and many other device options (in new version). Tyr it out and let me know what you think. I feed on feedback 🙂 . Keep us up to date on your progress. Love to see your stuff. Angela Pate MicronGreen
