#3D paint for 3DS!

Here's an IPAS news flash for ya…
I've just spent the last day having a BLAST with a true 3D paint program
running inside of 3DSr4. It's AMAZING. Although the program is from a 3rd
party developer (not Yost Group), it looks EXACTLY like the UI that we used in
Optimize and Displace. You just select an object to paint on, and then you can
rotate it to the orientation you want and start painting with user-definable
brushes (you've got control over many aspects of the brush, such as opacity,
feathering, angle, etc.). You can apply noise and other effects as "textures"
to the brush, and you can use pieces of bitmaps as brushes. In addition to
painting directly on the 3D model, you can bring up a 2D window to see what
your actual bitmap that you're creating looks like.
The whole thing is pretty mind-boggling, and I'm THRILLED to see something like
this come to 3D Studio in such an intuitive (and compared to the SGI market,
inexpensive) form.
I can't comment on who the developer is right now, but I've been assured that
this is going to ship before NAB (in early April). I'm sure that they'll make a
formal announcement sometime within the next month.
Whoa!

Whoa is right!
Can't WAIT to see this one!

PLEASE – I want one NOW! Can we Beta test it? We often need to "break down"
theatre sets, this tool would be perfect.. Regards, Peter
Uhh…You probably meant this for the Yost Group, Peter…
-Alan
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!
We've been waiting for something like this for a while now. I'm really glad to
see 3DS competing with the big boys…

Gary,
Wow!, I didin't think I'd see one of those for 3ds for a while – given that
they're still pretty new on SGI's
do you know an approxamate cost on it?
-Kyle
The cost is in the same range as all the other sophisticated IPAS routines from
the usual sources.
– G
good, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it.
-Kyle
Whoa indeed! Fractal Design has been talking about doing 3d painting. Looks
like somebody beat them to it.
Ian.
The best part about this is that it runs right inside 3DS, whereas the project
FD has been working on would've required exporting/importing and the host of
associated problems with that. On top of that, their adherance to the UI style
we developed for Disk#7 makes it very friendly and familiar to use.

Gary,
What's the deal with mapping coordinates with this paint plug-in ? Does it use
what ever coordinates that are assigned to the model? I've been creating some
seemless animal meshes to use with Bones-Pro. The biggest difficulty I'm
having is with mapping complex shapes.
Ian.
It uses the coordinates that you've assigned to the model.

Gary,
3D-Paint ! VERY exciting news. I had a situation just last week where that IPAS
would've saved the day for a game developer I was dealing with.
Bruce N. Goren
This sounds like a must buy! Thanks for the news!
Judy
3-D Paint within 3-DS, running like DISPLACE!!! YES! top of my wishlist. This
is really getting FUN.
Goes without saying Gary, FANTASTIC!
John
3D paint!!!!!
Does it do displacement stuff too? (like Taarna 3D does)
Sounds like something worth inplementing into the core of R5..
groovy.
JNJ
I can't comment on specifics, John (sorry).
Re it being a core feature… I doubt that 3D paint will be showing up as core
features of anyone's packages for awhile — until the technology becomes a bit
more commoditizied.

I was hoping someone would come up with such a system from within 3DS. The
first question which comes to mind though, is:
Can 3DS be set up to run with a Mouse & WACOM (or other) tablet
*simultaneously* ? That is, both drivers installed and active as needed. (maybe
this can be done now, I don't know ?)
If so, does the paint s/w recognize pressure sensitive stylus output ?
Thanks,
BILL
You can't have a mouse and tablet running at the same time, but you can switch
between them in one session in the config menu. Re questions about the 3D
paint package… I've got to wait for the developers to make the formal
announcement, and then they'll answer everything.
