Hi there, I hope somebody can help me with a problem. I have a Syquest-drive attached to the external SCSI-port of my Emplant-board and a Toshiba CD-ROM-drive attached to the internal SCSI-port. So my problem is that I can4t use the Syquest at the Amiga-side and can4t use the CD-ROM at the Apple-side. Both work fine vice versa. At the Amiga-sode when I use hdtoolbox with empscsi.device the Syquest-drive is recogniced and drive-informations are read. But when I try to low-level format the message shows empty and nothing else happens. When I try to use my CD-ROM from Apple-Emu and use DiskMount-Utility the drive is recogniced and the name of an inserted CD is shown up. But when I mount it, the message shows "Unable to load driver". Many thanks for any help Rainer Fruehwirth on AP from Vienna/Austria.

Do you have a CD-ROM driver for the Mac? Hiroo

Rainer: As the message from NRI indicates, you need a CDROM driver for your Mac CDROM. For my Toshiba 3401 I used a public domain driver for a NEC drive that I found on the Internet. Apparently the NEC driver is not too picky about really which drive is out there <g>. For my SyQuest-270, I have mine connected on the Amiga side but can easily access it from the Emplant and use Mac formatted SyQuest carts. I'm not positive, but it seems like empscsi.device has a problem with passing the low level format commands to some drives on the Mac side. // John (Warp 4040 & Emplant Quadra 840) \X/ Mercury@ins.infonet.net

Dear John, thank you for your reply. Can you tell me where to get this NEC driver on Internet (I have an Internet account). To the Syquest: I tried to use my Syquest on SCSI on Amiga side (GVP controller). But it did not work on the Apple side. And on the other hand (on emplant SCSI) it not only fails to format disks but also cannot read previously formatted disks (formatted by GVP faastprep). Are there any solutions? Thank you Rainer Fruehwirth, on AP from Austria/Europe

To tell you the truth Rainer, I don't remember which FTP site it was where I downloaded the NEC driver. Somebody else wrote me mail telling me where to find it but that was a few months ago. You might be able to use Archie to do a wildcard search and come up with the site. If not, then I could send it to you via CompuServe binary Email but it will cost you a few $$$. For using the SyQuest with the Emplant, all I have to do is use the Mac_HDSETUP program to make a MACOS mountlist entry. Then when I bring up the emulator, I select MACOS as one of the other devices I wish to add to the Mac system and when the Mac boots up, its there. This is how to use Mac formatted SyQuest carts to work with the Emplant. Otherwise, if you use Amiga formatted SyQuest carts, you can select the device name like SY1 from the emulators device list and then it should work as well. // John (Warp 4040 & Emplant Quadra 840) \X/ Mercury@ins.infonet.net

Hi John, thank you for your reply. I would appreciate to receave your CD Rom driver as binary email but please tell me first how to get it (is there anything else to do as with ASCII email?). My ploblem with my Syquest drive is to use it from the Amiga side (I do not have any problem to use it from the Apple side). When I put in any Amiga formatted disk there is no response at all. Thank you, anyway Rainer Fruehwirth on AP from Vienna/Austria

"thank you for your reply. I would appreciate to receave your CD Rom driver as binary email but please tell me first how to get it (is there anything else to do as with ASCII email?)." If you are using AutoPilot, and have it set up to receive CMail, then after I upload the file AP will download it for you automatically. You might make sure that CMail is set up with a download path so the file can go to the right location. // John (Warp 4040 & Emplant Quadra 840) \X/ Mercury@ins.infonet.net

It won't work on the Apple side unless you format a cartridge using an Apple formatting program, like FWB Hammer's Hard Disk Toolkit. You can access a Syquest cartridge from the Emplant if you have the drive connected to the Amiga buss and create a cartridge to use on the Emplant just as you set up a hard disk partition. However, that cartridge won't be usable on a real Mac. Your CD-ROM can be mounted using driver software such as FWB Hammer's CD-ROM Toolkit or Corel SCSI for Mac. Both products will normally work with most Toshiba CD-ROM drives.
