After using an Amiga for many years, I've finally bailed out and gotten an IBM
clone. I've been a professional programmer for the bulk of my career and I
think I know quite a bit about operating systems etc. I like what I see in this
new environment although the learning curve is steeper than Workbench.
I hope the Amiga continues because I have written software for it that I would
like to distribute to other users. It isn't as complete as I would like but is
useable
as is. When I get around to packaging it I'll post it here. I need a low
density
IBM drive that I can probably find where I work. The package is a shared
library
for sorting files (sort.library) and is faster than the ARP utility that
replaces
the Amiga Sort command. Anyway, I'll describe it in more detail in the package
itself.
One thing that's neat in windows is File Manager, something that the Amiga
could
use. No, I don't have time to write something as big as that. Another is
WinCIM.
Of course I'm biased about WinCIM because that's the only online software I've
used.
For those of you using Windows, go to the Main window and look at what's on
the screen on the control panel icon. Does that A look familiar ? Hmmm…

Maybe I haven't tried all of the commercial Amiga software available, but at
least
File Manager is free with windows. I can get a quick view of my complete file
structure. I can also do things that I would otherwise have to do in a DOS
command line environment, which I HATE!
That was just a personal comment. The main gist of the posting was the offer of
FREEWARE! That will still stand.

You mentioned File Manager for Windows. Have you seen or used DOpus on the
Amiga. Quite good!

You have got to be joking <g>. Give me a good Amiga directory utility like
DirWorks or Opus and File Manager wouldn't even come close. Heck, even the
file utility in Norton's Desktop is 10 times better than File Manager.
And as far as CIM goes, if the PC version is anything similar to the Mac
version I've used on the Emplant, well I'm not really that impressed
either. I can get a lot more done with much lower cost using AutoPilot.
CIM is nice if you like pretty icons and want to run up your phone bill
<g>.
Mind you, I'm not really knocking your new platform of choice. But for the
tools you've mentioned, I still prefer the Amiga equivalents a lot more.

What version of Windows are you using ? I'm using 3.1
Did you read any of the more advanced docs published by third party authors ?
Why can't I get any favorable comments about my sort utility ?
Who cares about a dinky directory utility, good or not ?
