#Recommendations wanted.

I am thinking about starting a home business that will involve the Internet. I
will probably want to run Unix or Windows NT. I need a system I can secure as I
will be giving ftp and or Mosaic access. Security will be very important due to
one of "features" I plan to offer.
I will probably want to set up an ISDN connection to the internet for speed. I
would the system to be able to handle multiple users and give each reasonably
fast access. I am looking for recommendations on the type of computer to buy
for these purposes. I currently have an accelerated A2000 and my experience
with AmiTCP at 28.8 tells me this machine does not come close to my needs. If I
could find one, I was thinking an A3000 or A4000 running Unix, but I am not
sure that these are fast enough. I want to minimize my financial outlay, so a
Sun or SGI workstation may be too much. I have seen alot of talk about DEC
Alpha's in another thread and am thinking this might be a decent solutions. Any
recommendations would be welcome.

You don't want to mess with Amiga Unix for that. You want a Sun SparcStation.
You also probably don't want ISDN — it really isn't very fast for a server,
and it is usually not possible to set up a dedicated connection with it. You'll
need a leased line, speed depending on exactly what you are planning to serve
(Web servers generally want more than 56k). Not cheap.
The details of setting up an ISP are many and complicated. Be careful that you
don't get in over your head quickly!

Who exactly do I talk to about a leased line? The phone company? My current
internet provider? SprintNet or TeleNet? Does a leased line use a phone line or
is a special line need to be run. I am thinking the latter must be the case.

You need to talk both to your ISP and to the phone company. The ISP has to
tell you where the other end of the leased line will be connected, the phone
company will tell you what the costs will be to connect that leased line.
Expect line costs to be in the hundreds per month, minimum, plus whatever the
ISP is going to charge for Internet connection services.
No, you can't use standard copper for better than 56k (and I don't think they
use it for 56k except with ISDN). They don't run a new line all the way
between your site and the ISP POP, but they do run a new line from the local
office to your site.

As a former Central Office Technician I have installed 56kb circuits on
carrier systems connected to copper and ISDN was not implimented at that time.
