Thanks for the help Jon. I tried looking in DL 10 for the new version and
I found an ASCII file that contains the code but no .exe. I need to get
the
exe because I do not have the Microsoft C compiler. I am a Turbo C user.
Unfortunately I was not able to read the message you referred to (#23612)
because I could not find a way with Tapcis to retrieve a specific message.
Is there a way to get the .exe through Compuserve? If not is there a way
to order it for a fee on diskette? I would prefer to get it through CIS if
I can because it is faster.

For future reference, the way to read a specific message, along with the
rest of its thread is to use the <A>dvanced entry from the online menu in
TAPCIS. Then select <U>ser command and type REA THR NUM:23612 (for
example). Then select <O>nline, the Forum you want, and TAPCIS will do the
rest. Also, if Tom's comment regarding the Turbo C version of AMC didn't
help, let me know. I'll do the compile for you and EasyPlex you the result.
Do you know how to handle ARC or preferably ZIP formats?
Thanks again for the help Jon. I will download the Turbo C file tonight
and let you know if it is the new version or not. I can handle both arc
and zip files if necessary.
I appreciate the information on how to read a specific message and its
thread. Although I have been using Compuserve for awhile my knowledge is
is almost entirely limited to using forums via Tapcis and the only
reference material I have is the Tapcis manual. I ordered a book several
years ago called the Compuserve User's Guide but it is almost useless and
is now out of date. The word "Read" does not even appear in the index.
Is there any way to get an indexed list of the commands with a brief
explanation of each in a form that is suitable for used as a reference?

The last few pages (starting on page 139) of my printed TAPCIS manual
contain a summary of the new forum commands. (I have the January 1989,
revision 5.2 version.) If you don't have this, there is a file called
CMDS.ARC in LIB 1 of the TAPCIS forum that is supposed to contain this
information. There is a whole page on the syntax of the read command.
By the way, it has no reference to the NUM:nnnn syntax. The way I
happened on that is I have a habit of logging all my online sessions. If
you use the "read header" mode of scanning forums and then go back and mark
the ones you want to read, the NUM:nnnn is the syntax TAPCIS uses when you
go <O>nline. I happened to notice that and then went back to inspect the
online.log file. The other approach is to try things out and then exit
TAPCIS before going online and check out the script files that TAPCIS
generates. The best way to learn is check out what the experts do and then
experiment on your own!
