Drat! Now I can't find the message. Someone was looking for a genealogy
program. There is "Genealogist" on Fred Fish #865. Enjoy!

there is a couple of demo's here somewhere, check for A-Gene, I use it and
with the new upgrades it's pretty good, and it's only about 25.00 to register
it.

Marianne, I intercepted your reply to Thomas re a genealogy program. There are
several good ones for the Amiga, although I'm not familiar with the one on the
Fish disk. I use "Your Family Tree", aka "YFT" (commercial), available from
MVP Software, P.O. Box 458, Aliquippa, Pa. 15001 (Telephone: 412-378-0411).
It has a lot of nice features and is not expensive. Another one you might look
for on boards (try the Roots Forum – Other Software) for the demo of "Origins".
It's also commercial, but you can try out the demo. I have the commercial
version, but frankly, I prefer YFT, which I think has more flexibility.
Whatever you decide on, make sure it has GEDCOM capability. GEDCOM, in case
you aren't familiar with it, is a protocol whereby you can save data to a file
and import it into another program on any platform running a program which
supports GEDCOM. That's important because 1) you might want to change programs
at some point, and won't have to re-enter all your data, and 2) you can
exchange data with other genealogists, either bringing a .ged file into your
database or providing them with data – either way, neither of you has to input
the data.
Both YFT and Origins support GEDCOM. Good luck.

Could you please expand on your opinions in comparing YFT to Origins? Are
you comparing the original Origins, or the newer Origins II? Have you
ever seen Scion Genealogist?
I am currently using GENP, which is no longer supported. I am considering
moving to something else to get away from a few bugs.

Now I'm going to jump in with the mention of a very good genealogoy program.
The Mormons use it and a call to their churh would probably get more info on
it. It's for the PC (Darn it!) but I think it's text based so CROSS-PC could

The program you are thinking about is called Personal Ancestral File, or PAF.
It is a good, simple program for people who don't demand a lot of their
genealogy programs. They put out an update not long ago, but it turned out to
have some problems and was withdrawn until they are fixed.
There are many good genealogy programs for the MSDOS machines and for Windows –
and a couple of good, powerful programs for the MacIntosh. The best MSDOS
program is The Master Genealogist. RootsIV is just as powerful, but far more
difficult to use.
But for the Amiga, there are far fewer choices. From what I've seen, Your
Family Tree and Origins are about the best commercial programs, and AFT (Amiga
Family Tree) is the best shareware or freeware one I've seen. All three of
them have GedCom. Even though I was a beta tester for the first Origins
program, I never liked its interface – but that's personal opinion. It might
suit you fine. The program was very good in many ways. At the time I tested
it, YFT did not support GEDCOM and was inadequate in handling sources of
information, footnoting, etc. I have not seen the new version of it, and I
understand that it is greatly improved.

I'm not into this as intensively as some, but I've got my Emplant working
nicely.

I don't know about the Mac shareware. The most popular Mac commercial program
seems to be one called Reunion. There is a library of Mac software over in
Roots forum, including a file that describes every known package – commercial
and shareware – for the MacIntosh. I don't remember the exact filename, but I
know it is in the "MacIntosh Software" library over there. I think they have
some shareware programs you can download from there, too.
