> How about we publically challenge all those 3D Studio modelers out there to a low polygon modeling contest? What do you think. The best model under 1000 polygons wins. Check over in CyberForum's Virtual City section. VRASP has a world building contest currently under way. I'm trying to use it to goose the folks over there to get their VR Virtual City group project moving again. Perhaps some 3D Studio/ACAD folks would like to get involved. Also the VRASP thing might be a great way for Micron Green (or others) to get some recognition of their product by creating an award winning Virtual World <g>.

Hi Jerry! Good to see you here! How is that little Eddy and Maryann? I have been trying to talk Millard into letting me bring the boys to Meckler just so Jarrod could meet Eddy, but no luck so far… :(. >>>>Check over in CyberForum's Virtual City section. I just can't seem to find the hours in the day. Thanks for keeping us informed of some of their activities. I strongly urge everyone interested in CDK type acitvities to frequent this forum and learn about what these folks are up to. They are very experienced Cyberspacers. I know that there are always concerns about rights to models in contests like these, as Paul Sanford has mentioned on the other thread. What do you think about such issues. How is is handled elsewhere? You've probably seen such contests or activities before, Jerry, any input for us? Personally, I think that such entries should be given away freely. We don't want to sell them anywhere, but it is true that both Autodesk and ourselves, and anyone else for that matter that is promoting real-time 3D software should benifit by other seeing such examples. However, I think that the prizes offered should be compensation enough if a modeler is interested in entering the contest. To both Jerry and all others who read this: Anyway, I would certainly contribute our software as prizes and I am sure Kevin could come up with some goodies too, so anyone with any other ideas please speak up! Any other interested sponsors out there? Angela

Angela, Things have been rather busy round here. I spent the last day or two trying to get this stupid mac back on line after it took a disk hit. (what backups?) Try doing that while chasing a 2yr old or three (Eddy had two girl friends over this morning for a party.) I'm not sure if they will be coming with me to Meckler. Heck with the replanning I did last week on my ARPA job, I'm not sure if I will be there (er, well, maybe I should be there to ensure I have a job after this one finishes 😎 Not sure how to handle a 3d world project/contest. My prior experience has been with image contests. There the sponsoring company gets some rights to use the images for some promotional work and the artist usually retains other rights as well as getting prizes. Sometimes the artist doesnt retain many rights. 3D worlds are tougher, as people could pick objects/behavior out of the database and use them elsewhere. Hmmm, virtual collage? Jerry

Hi Jerry! >>>>>3D worlds are tougher, as people could pick objects/behavior out of the database and use them elsewhere. Hmmm, virtual collage?<<<< Ah, yes, well this has been a standard issue with 3D modelers for years it seems. I suppose it is no different for virtual worlds as it is for animation models. The models available from companies like Viewpoint also come with keyframe data for predefined actions and serious surfaces already applied, I am told. We have talked a long time of offering a library for virtual world builders to go out with our stuff. I have textured trees of only 9 polygons each and such things that come in pretty handy in making virutal worlds. Not the kind of thing that would interest animators much, but for interactive worlds, they come in pretty handy. Anyway, time marches on……. I am trying to get some Gif together of ourselves for sending to others. Any chance of getting a picture of you, Maryann and Eddy? I would like to show other little kids pictures to Jarrod and let him see someone that I talk to. He is always asking what I am doing, and I tell him I am talking to my friends. He doesn't understand. My other boy, Brandon, (9 yrs old now) on the other hand has friends from everywhere that he chats with. I had to get him his own account on Internet because he was driving me crazy using mine. I told him that he has to earn his own CompuServe account. Most of his friend are not on Cserve anyway so he can wait, although John's VisCis had him so excited that he could "talk" to others in a virtual world, which he is pretty experienced at interacting within. He is still the best flyer I know using a Spaceball except for the guys from Spacetec themselves. He doesn't even use the 'training wheels' single axis filter, but really 6D simultaneously. Pretty smooth. I get him to lay down all my paths when I need good 6D flying. There I am, on about my kids again…..anyway, see you later……… Angela

Hi Angela, >> I have textured trees of only 9 polygons each and such things that come in pretty handy in making virutal worlds. << Could I see some of these soon, to see how they work with the Main Street project? Paul S.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Yes I will upload my little trial city NAVCITY.3DS in the Showcase forum for some feedback. You are free to use anything from this model for yours. Let me know what you think and how we can fit in with what you are doing. I haven't animated in a long while and i hope to learn a lot from you all working on this project. Its my declared recreation these days. No one here is allowed to give me a hard time for modeling on the city……. <g> It will also be in the new NAVFlyer for Windows utility that we are uploading in the CDK section. But this is a much bigger file that is also useless without WinG and Win32S (two other files to download that we have posted for those hardy enough to give it a try). Keep up the good work…….angela
