Standard for Graph soil

Hi there –
I need someone to settle an arguement between geologist and engineers. What we
need to know is whether or not there is some form of standard for graphical
representation of soil types. Is there a WRITTEN standard for graphically
representing a sand or a clay. I know what most people use for these but we
can't seem to find an ASTM or USGS publication or something similar which gives
what exactly these symbols should look like.

This is probably negative help, but, the USGS _Suggestions to Authors of the
Reports of the United States Geological Survey_, Seventh Edition, p.55, simply
says: <Standard patterns indicate rock types>. They are discussing the
construction of columnar sections for publication by the USGS. My (very old)
copy of Robert Compton's _Manual of Field Geology_ has an appendix of suggested
patterns but doesn't discuss the origins of these patterns.

The ask-a-geologist service that connects to USGS geologists by Internet mail
is described in INTERN.TXT in this forum's library. If there is a USGS
standard, I would have to guess someone there would know it. I saw a recent
assertion in sci.geo.geology that ask-a-geologist is alive and well, apparently
in answer to rumors of its demise.
