Most mysterious this ray tracing. Is this mathematical entry done on a
"pure" programming level, or is there a secondary program that assists in the
creation and placement of the spheres and arcs and the calculation of the light
rays? Do you know if there is any printed material that goes into more depth
about ray tracing, or is it a method known only to a mysterious few?

What you need is a ray-tracing program which supports mapping digi-view
pictures on to 3-d surfaces (polygons, spheres, curve patches, etc.). This
would allow you to produce images with things like digitized pictures being
refracted through spheres. It would be expensive computationally, but the
results would be great.
