#PxS Memory Drain

I have an Amiga 500 with 1 meg of Ram and a hard drive. I am having problems running PixelScript due to running out of memory. Tonight I tried to print an 11.5K file that was all text and ran into the same problem. The file contained one font in three sizes; 14pt., 24pt. and 48pt., all Roman. After the file began to process I got an "Out Of Memory" message. I finally got the file to print by running from CLI. When I opened the window for PixelScript (Intuition interface) I had about 725K of free memory. Considering the size of the file I would have thought that this was enough memory. Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal given my configuration? Lee 😉

You are probably doing nothing wrong, what Pixelscript probably wants is contigous memory, you may have 725k avail but maybe 400k maybe contigous, because the Amiga fragments memory there might not be enough contigous memory left, maybe you could try not loading Workbench, try hitting ctrl d just as the amiga is booting workbench might without that there will be enough memory, also type avail and see how much contigous memory is available, also and the text file you are trying to print limit yourself to one font, that changing of font uses alot of memory. Sorry about my grammer. Hope I helped. Richard

Richard, After I sent the message it dawned on me that contigous memory was the problem. I did run PixelScript after interupting startup with no problem. Also, I did use only one font. I used three different sizes of that font stule (Roman) because I was doing a layout for a poster and needed the varying font sizes. I am going to try a multipage document next from CLI to see if I can get out put. That has been a real problem in the past. Is there anyway that I can 'create' more contigous memory by running something like the "Highwater" program found in Digi-Paint 3? If that would solve the problem I would really be ready to roll! Thanks for the help. Lee 😉

I don't know if there is a way to de-frag memory to free up more, I know a sure way is to buy more memory (expensive), buying more memory gives you more fast memory, I am sorry I can't be more help, I have 1.5 megs and seems to run out of memory just trying to print simple graphics giving pixelscript.
