Well, here I sit with egg on my face once again. For months now, I have
strutted my dumdness on this SIG, proud of the fact that I bought an Amiga
to cope with same. Now however, I come to you needing help. I hope someone
will toss a bone of wisdom this way. I am about to start a project that (I
believe) is suited to the Amiga better than any other small (read desktop)
computer. The problem is that I'm not really sure of the technology
availible. This project concerns a "super catalog" of sorts, and it seems
to me, calls for CD-ROM to implement. We're talking multi mega byte
storage, with very fast retrevel (sp), also mixing pictures (not drawings)
and text. My basis for choosing CD-ROM stems from an article in the
March/April Amiga World. This article states that a "standard" has yet to
be set for CD-ROM, but "they" were working on it. I think Sony was to have
a large say in the matter, but I'm not sure. In any event, my questions
are:
1) Has a standard been set?
2) Has a reliable reader been developed?
3) If so, what kind of access speed are we talking about?
4) What is the fastest language for the Amiga? (Operating speed)
5) Can a dummy learn it?
The questions go on and on, but I have to stop sometime. I hope this
doesn't bore you good folks, because this project is something I'm VERY

Can't help you too much but to (1) Microsoft have published a standard
operating system to CD-ROMs (I don't know will this affect Amigas…). To

There is a CDROM standard that requires each player to include a 68000 and
the OS9 operating system. You might check with Microware (the vendors of
OS9) as to sources of working systems and info on the current status of all
this.

Howvere we don't know of one that interfaces to the Amiga …. yet. The
data transfer rate for a CD-ROM disk is about 150K bytes/second, and I'd
advise a direct read as Amiga Dos would slow this down considerably. The
seek time is about 1 to 2 seconds, so you have to be clever on file
