That 64K limitation is only for the sample buffers being played. I'm led to believe that it's just a 64K bank, and you can move stuff in or out of it very easily.

I'm led to believe that you can move stuff in and out, but not all that easily. Still, 64K is limiting if I want 16 voices each playing a different sampled sound. I *might* be able to fit 4 different sampled sounds, but not 16. A little disappointing. –>Steve Bennett

Have you heard the store demo for the IIGS? They're pumping a lot of recorded time through that chip, with simultaneous graphic animation, so it can't be _too_ hard to move stuff around. I agree that 64K is less than one might optimally want, but GEEZ four years ago you could only fit 64K in the whole MACHINE! And sorry, but how can one call that kind of audio hardware "disappointing?". First came the Apple II, then the Atari, then the C64, the Mac had the first sampling audio, then came the Amiga, and now there's the IIGS which, (sorry, everybody) sounds orders of magnitude better than anything else that's come before.

Actually (really picking nits here…) the first sampling audio *I* ever heard was back in 1979 with a DAC board in a SWTPC 6800… The Mac was a bit of a latecomer… <grin> –>Steve Bennett

the "ease of moving things around" on the //GS is due to the "fill" mode. this allows the software to essentially draw everything in wire-frame form and the graphics chip changes colors as it goes along a scan line according to the color of the line defining the edge of an object. i think that's a real neat mode. i also like the 32 channels of sound, but i don't like the cpu or the operating system or the price. also it would be better with richer graphics modes (resolution/colors). –Scotty (amiga's still #1)
