#It's only a Mirage

At the risk of a) appearing to harp on a subject, and b) depressing you
greatly: Do go see & hear a IIgs, the demo stuff is quite impressive.
Saxaphone –real saxaphone, not looped– with digital reverb (recorded, not
computed reverb), drum set, etc… and no recorder-through-a-carpet 7.5KHz
cutoff.
Chris,
No, I haven't yet. You aren't harping, and I wouldn't be depressed. ANY
advance is an advance, and the fact that it didn't occur in my computer
first is only a minor inconvenience. After all, those Yamaha and Ensoniq
chip sets are just that… chip sets. Anything they can build in the box
we could hang on the buss… if someone wants to badly enough. Me,
personally, I want something better than Mirage quality, though I will
agree with you that, at the current state of the art, Mirage sound quality
exceeds Amiga sound quality. If price and availablility were the same, and
assuming high quality audio were your goal, which would YOU rather have…
the IIGS with Mirage sound quality, or the new Hybrid Arts digitizer?
I see wonderful things on the horizon. They're a little blurry now, but
let's hope they'll come into view soon.
Hey: Don't knock the Mirage sound quality. It's no Emulator or Kurzweil
buut it's price/performance is great. A Mirage-no keyboard is $1300 (1700
with, and that's about half what the cheapest sampler available was when it
came out. Too bad they're talking to those GS creeps, though.
Terry,
Again, don't take my remarks too far. I agree that the price/performance
ratio of the Mirage is excellent. My comment was intended to indicate that
if someone was going to build a sound generating system for the Amiga
(considering what we've arleady got, which is sufficient for most home
use), I would sincerely hope that they'd go farther than Mirage quality. No
slam of the Mirage was intended. After all, I love the DX7, but when you
get right down to it, it's every bit as noisy as a Mirage. You work with
what you've got.

I'm not sure whether I'd rather have the Hybrid thingie or the IIGS.
Actually, one of the people in my group already has an Emulator II, and the
place I work at has a Mirage, so I guess if I had the money I'd get a Mac
Plus and buy Sound Designer! Hybrid Arts is 16 bits, but there are more
Mirage samples available. They're very different things, really. As a
music/sound programmer for consumer software, I really only have interest
in the built-in sound stuff…but as a dedicated audio experimenter, I only
have interest in the best computer-A/D-D/A/graphics system. which would
YOU choose?
<Sigh> Well, there's another perfectly good hypothetical point shot to
heck. Never was any good at forensics, anyway. 8)
