Several questions regarding setting up an environment on my A1000:
1) How can I determine which AmigaDOS files can be deleted from my startup
disk safely? I'm sure that most of the commands never get exercised
but I can't be sure. Is there a straightforward way of examining
software to see if it invokes any AmigaDOS routines? Should I take
a trial-and-error approach? 2) If one installs a hard drive, is it
possible to have the KickStart code
as well as the workbench code boot from the hard drive? How else
can one set up full autobooting without installing one of the various
sets of KickStart replacement chips? 3) Using a MacIntosh I find it
very easy to copy and paste bitmaps between
applications, either thru use of the clipboard or the scrapbook. How
can I facilitate similar graphics transfers between applications on
my A1000? Typically I would like to grab a chess diagram from
ChessMaster 2000, copy it to a DPaint II for sizing and touching
up, and then paste it into a word processor. I don't have any
specialized desktop publishing software for doing this, but am
in search of a generalized way of accomplishing this. The ability
to do universal copy and paste operations on the Mac constitutes
perhap he only real advantage on gets using the Mac (I 'spose
getting results on paper works better there as well). I've seen
a PD utility which allowed copy and paste of text between windows
and apps, but I've not seen a comparable Amiga pgm for graphics.
Bill,
1) You can delete many files from your boot disk. Most aren't used at all by
other commands, though there are exceptions such as RUN. Best way is really
trial and error.
2) At this time, there is only one HD available that allows full autoboot
including KS. It is the Comspec drive, and isa little on the pricy side.
There is no rela reason for having autoboot from HD for most people, though
the cry will always be for having it. CBM is going to be providing a method
sanctioned by them for autoboot in a future release.
3) There are a few utilities that will grab the screen or any part of it. One
I particularly like is 'clipit'.
