We do a bit of color work in Illustrator and Freehand, and the only "trick"
I have found is to take each element individually and make your trap by
stroking or oversizing…sure wish there was a program which handled trap
more automatically, but I haven't seen it yet…

I haven't seen any programs either. We sometimes handle that problem in
pre-press by putting acetate between the negs and plates, when they are
being burned. This spreads the letters or images.
