AmigaWorld Magazine wants to put your comments in print. What do you like
and dislike about that new hardware or software item you purchased

I have the Supra ST-157n hard drive that uses word-sync. The drive is
highly reliable and INTUITIVE! The auto-installed start-up script sets up
my drive so that everytime I turn on my system, the hard drive checks
itself and fixes a lot of problems (incomplete files, damaged files: equal
to IBM DOS chkdsk command). So I never have to worry about problems!! The
Word-sync doesn't seem to be any faster than DMA, and it actually seemed to
perform a tad slower. For example, DMA will load AudioMasterII about 5
sec. faster than Word-sync will. I was hoping for something AS FAST as
DMA, but I don't know. I'm not up on DMA limitations. I know I can read
and write to my hard disk at the same time (using 2 seperate programs) and
also download into my ram disk at the same time (awesome computer!). Can
DMA do that as well?
If it can, I want DMA instead. Although I spoke with the company that
makes AMAX, the mac emulator for the Amiga and they said they will be
supporting the SCSI interface that the Supra HD has installed on it.
I also have the Supra Ram 2000 board (upto 8 megs.) and the Supra 2400
modem. Supra tech. support is very good, although a bit more knowledgable
staff would be nice.

Go with an 11 ms DMA hd, '030 @ 30 MHz and you'll find yourself doing
things twice since the first time they happen so fast that you don't even
get a chance to see what occurred!

I guess I'll keep my HD, but please send me a check for $2000.00 so that
I can buy the 68030 board. 8 ^ )

If you ever do go with the '030 and 32 bit wide memory, you won't be happy
with anything else. I was not joking about some things happening so fast
that either you don't realize that they happened or if there was something
that you wanted to watch, you miss it. Shortly after installing this GVP,
I had occassion to look at a pretty good sized file in P Edit. The file
was tabular and the last page looked much like the first. In any event, I
hit a "shift-down arrow" to go to the end of the file — twice. The third
time, I looked at the line number and realized that I was at the end of the
file, so I hit a shift-up arrow. If I was careful not to blink, I could
see the event happen!

Holy Mackeral that's fast, and they have a card now that'll boost the Amiga
upto 40 mhz. now!!! I'm still willing to buy a card like that because, as
I said before, I need to save as much time as possible in rendering
animations using turbo silver and Sculpt-4D. Right now it takes so long to
do an anim. with those 2 prgs. that I have to default to Dpaint III (which
is not bad at all)!
I guess I'll have to wait for one of my rich relatives to kick the bucket
before I can afford an accelerator card to turn my Amiga into an F-18
Hornet, I wanna see this puppy FLY!

40 MHz! Wow, that is rather speedy! I am not doing anything right now
that would cause me to even consider that kind of speed (though no doubt
sometime in the future…….).

40 MHz., even 33 MHz, would be fine, but no less. When you have a class
project where you have to take a close-up overview of a house, then
pull-back (zoom-out), to the point that the earth is but a small dot on the
screen, I mean I just can't afford the time it takes to do that (about 3
weeks to a month – just to render it)!!
I think I'll moseee on down to the For-Sale section! By the way, what do
you need at that processing speed for yourself, eh? :^)

Word processing and DTP (mostly). Pagestream is a pretty decent responding
program on an '030. Looking pretty hard at the 2500/030 also to do some
development work. Really can't afford to risk this machine for that sort
of thing and besides, really hate to try to move this machine around.

Barbara, I'm doing a project on PStream 1.8 right now, and it's a delight
to work with. Most of the bugs are gone, and there some enhancements. The
printout is very nice. I'm looking forward to seeing how it compares with
PPage and the new Compugraphic font availability. I have also NOT yet
tried it with PixelScript – but on this particular project I won't bother.
The product is just fine as is…..Nancy
