A friend just purchased PageStream (1.8) and a HP Laser for his Amiga. Now, when he runs PS, it locks with an 'insufficient memory' error on the part of the printer. He has only 512K in the printer. I know that in the IBM/Mac world you need at least 1.5 meg of printer RAM in order to do any real HP laserprinting… is this the same problem on the Amiga? Does he need more RAM in the printer? (the computer has nine meg – plenty). How much does he need to be safe (for average text/ graphics on a page)? Any help appreciated… –jp–

You're right. He probably needs at least 1 meg, more likely a couple to do anything usefull. I have IIP and a 2meg board in it, plus a PostScript cartridge. Ron

To print out a full page of text with graphics at 300DPI on HP laser, you're going to need at least 2.5 meg and probably 3 meg of ram IN THE PRINTER. The ram in the computer's cpu (unfortunately) is not what counts here. The computer creates an image of the page and actually downloads that to the printer…so the printer must have enough ram to receive that page. Some lasers will simply accept the input till they are full, and then print out what they have received, and then accept more, then print etc…. other lasers will give a memory full warning and wait for further instruction.

To do full page graphics should only require an additional 1meg unless he has a lot of downloaded fonts too. I ran that way until I got the PDP postscript cartridge which requires an additional 1 meg for a total of 2.5 meg. Tom

John, If he were to add one meg (to make it 1.5 meg), he should be OK with PageStream. NOT HP ram, however. Their's is the most expensive. Some of the ram cards you can get unpopulated – or partially populated. So the smart money would be on a 2 meg card, with at least 1 meg of chips at first. The Postscript cartridge for the HP Lasers requires 2 megs of ram in the printer. Lloyd

We have a 2 meg board in our LJ II, and it work very well with PageStream. We bought it that way, though, so I have no experieince with what happens with less memory. I *do* know that a 2 meg board (2.5 mb total) will work fine. Ben Amateur Radio Callsign is A A 7 A S
