I am just getting into DTP and am wondering if some of the more experienced
users have any suggestions that might speed up the learning process?

Depends on what program you're using, i.e. WdPf, Pmaker or VP — everyone
on those fora is very helpful, and it's the best place to start. Parker's
Looking Good in Print is worthwhile, also Jan White's Graphic Design for
the Electronic Age. Will-Harris, WdPf5: Desktop Publishing In Style is
excellent, regardless of your program. My favorite is Alex Brown, In
Print, which teaches you a lot about typography as well. Then there are
various special publications: Personal Publishing and Publish! are both
worth reading on a regular basis. But the most important thing is to get
up/running and start making mistakes and learning from them (I've been
dtping for about a year, VP for the last 4 mos.). ^^^robert
Thanks for the tips Robert, I will investigate several of the publications
you have mentioned. I am using (or trying to use) VP, but it looks like the
learning curve might be a tad steep. Just curious, do you print your own
material on a laser or use a service?

You can find a file in our Personal Publishing library (#16) called
PPFREE.TXT that's a form that can be printed out and mailed to PP to see if
you qualify for a complimentary subscription. If nothing else, you can get
the appropriate address from the file!

Yes, there's a *terrific* book called "Ventura Tips, Tricks, and Traps"
from Que publishers. The author is: Schuyler Lininger. (No relation <grin>)
If you have trouble finding the book, let me know. Most book stores should
either have it or be able to order it.
Thanks for the lead on the Que book Skye, I have several of their other
books and find them to be very good. I have " Mastering Ventura " by Matt
Holtz but was looking for secondary sources.
