Can you or anybody else out there tell the difference between Multi ad Creator and Freehand? We're planning on doing display ads for a tab newspaper on Mac (editorial is already Macinized). Also, what format does MAC export? Is it compatable with XPress? Does it still bomb? We already using MD11, Illus 88 and FH with XPress, and I don't want to create more problems than solutions.

I've seen MultiAd Creator, and have taken it around the block a couple times. I don't use it regularly. It seems real powerful, *and* it seems kind of "buggy", for lack of better word. One for-instance: I rotated a tiff file, and at actual size it looked great, but at enlarged sizes, it "unrotated" — appeared "straight"; not what you want in a graphic arts tool! In contrast, and in fairness, FreeHand displays only a box when any but the original orientation (angle, not size) of a tiff file is incorporated into a layout. Neither is ideal. But then, no other programs (meaning Quark or PageMaker) will rotate such objects at all. I use FreeHand extensively for all kinds of things — including display-type advertising — and I love the program, with all its faults. I've said before that if I had but one piece of software to take to the hypothetical desert island, it would doubtless be FreeHand. It exports, by the way, EPS, which is importable — in color even — into Quark and, I believe, PageMaker CE. Good luck. Mike PS I retrieved this message only because mentions of Multi-Ad Creator — online here or in the trade pubs — are so extremely rare. Any other MAC users out there? I'd be curious to know what you think…

Wait a minute. It sounds like you use FreeHand more than I do, but I've been able to rotate a TIFF file in FreeHand and then view it properly in XPress. The first time I tried it I didn't have enough memory (I guess), so I switched to Finder-only (on a 5Mb Mac II, at the time), and I was able to view it fine. <BW>
