Just a question for the crowd…
Many typesetting systems have built-in systems that will assist in billing
procedures. Most of them keep track of things like keystrokes, amount of
time associated with a certain file, operator…
If you could have anything you wanted, how would the "perfect" system work.
What would it keep track of? How would it prepare reports? Use your
imagination or look at how you currently do billing and tell me how a
typesetting package could automate that…
I'll be looking for gobs of remarks!

Well, besides keeping track of how long a file is open (and who was logged
onto the machine when it was open), I guess this "mythical" accounting
program should distinguish between the time spent printing and the time
spent working on a document. Also, it should probably be sensitive to idle
time, time in which no action (such as printing, scrolling, keying, or
formatting) is taking place. Regarding printing, it should keep track of
which pages have been printed, and how many times each. You should be able
to add up all the stats for all files associated with a job (maybe all
files in a particular folder), and print reports that give average times
per page/file/section/job.
