ATTENTION EXPERIENCED AMIGA USERS! I AM NEW TO THE AMIGA WORLD AND WOULD LIKE SOME HELP. ANY INFO YOU HAVE ON THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. 1) WHERE DO I FIND WHAP? 2) WHAT GAMES ARE AVAILABLE FOR AMIGA THAT SUPPORT A MODEM? 3) I DOWNLOADED AN IMAGE FROM ONE OF THE ARTS LIBRARY AND COULD NOT LOAD IT WITH DIGI PAINT OR DPAINT. THE DESCRIPTION SAID IT WAS AN IFF FILE. AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG?? THANKS GREG

Hi, Greg. Welcome to AmigaForum – and to the Amiga community. You are in excellent company here! You can find Whap! in Library 16 of AmigaTech Forum. You download the demo version that is there, try it out, and once you are sold on it, you send in your $39.95 to the authors. THey will then send you an Email message that will automagically turn your demo version into a full registered version. Really neat thing there! I don't know much about games, but I do recall that there are one or two modem games in Library 4 of ARTS. Also, there is a set of TeleGames on the market. I know the author, fellow named Scott Lamb, and they are published by Software Terminal in Ft. Worth, but I suspect you can find them at your dealer's. I cannot tell you anything about the quality of them, because I've never tried them. Others will help you with the games. Did you un-archive the image you downloaded? All of our files are packed with one or another of three ARChive utilities: ARC, ZOO, or LHARC. ARC is the older, and has some problems, but many of our older files were uploaded in that format when it was the best we had. ZOO is newer and is OK, but LHARC came along recently and it packs the files to make much smaller downloads and seems to be the method of choice now. You can recognize the various ones because the last three letters of the file name tell you which is which. To get the files to unpack them with, go to Library 4 of AmigaTech. The files are ARC.EXE, ZOO.EXE, and LHARC.EXE. There is another file, ARCHLP.EXE that will teach you how to use all of these. And a member reminded me tonight that yet one more file, UNDOX.LZH makes it much easier to use all of these. Once you get it unpacked and into your c: directory, it will unpack all the various kinds for you automatically – if you have ARC, ZOO, and LHARC in your c: directory too. Please ask if you need more help. ……Betty

Greg, Welcome to AmigaArts. 8) 1) You will find Whap! in the AmigaTech Forum, in DL 16. You might want to wait a short while before downloading it, since a new version to support the new Compuserve Mail prompts will be released shortly. 2) modem games – sorry, but I can't help much with that one since I'm not much of a gamester. I believe that Falcon might. 3) Almost all of the files in the DL's are compressed in some way in order to save downloading time and library space. You can tell which compression program is required to extract the program by the extension on the file name. Filename.ARC indicates that the ARC program is required. Filename.ZOO indicates that the ZOO program is required. Filename.LZH indicates that the LHARC program is required. All of these programs can be found in AmigaTech DL 4. There is also a program called ARCHLP.EXE that is directly executable and will explain things in a bit more detail that is possible here. I'd recommend getting it. 4) You didn't ask, but, you should be using 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, and NO parity for any downloading. 2400 baud is most economical for downloading. Compuserve B+, Quick B, and B are the protocols of choice, in that order of preference. Hope this helps. 8) David

Greg, In my opinion (humble, that is) FIREPOWER by Microillusions. It's a lot of fun, and there are several public domain level editors that extend the play a lot. Nick

Hi Greg! Welcome to the AmigaForums! Just to add to what the other folks have been saying: FirePower, Flight Simulator II, and Telegames all support modems. There is at least one other game that I know of which supports modems, but for the life of me I can't think of what it is. If I remember, I'll let you know. Steve

Greg, Populous, Firepower, 688 Attack Sub, Battle Chess, Falcon, and numerous other games support head-to-head modem play. There's a thread on the Gamers' forum (GO GAMERS) dealing with exactly that topic. Robert
