Try adding JUST the NECCDrvr file to your System Folder. If that works ok, then you will be able to read standard Mac HFS discs. If Foreign File Access and the like won't work, it may be just that you have old versions of them.
The CDR-80 is too old to read Photo CD discs. You will need to upgrade to a newer drive. Sorry about that!
NEC sells both the T128 and the T130 in different packages. They have driver updates available directly from NEC Tech support if you need one for some reason. But… if you have a driver that is working for you now, don't change it! Remember, if it ain't broke, don't fix…

Sounds like you may have a problem with a 'soft error'…. often caused by termination problems or conflicts in upper memory. Boot up with a 'clean' CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT and see what happens.

NEC has a driver available that will read single session Photo CD discs. contact them at 1-800-NEC-INFO for updates.
The 1742 will work fine with NEC drives if you load the Adaptec ASPI Manager and an ASPI CD-ROM driver from Trantor or Corel. ASPI makes everything easy! It also gives you a choice of third party drivers for your card.
Trantor Systems also supplies an ASPI driver package that supports the Apple CD SC on your Always SCSI card with the Always ASPI Manager. The Always ASPI Manager is downloadable from their BBS. The Trantor ASPI driver package is available from Trantor for $59.

The CDR-35 will not read even single session PhotoCD discs. You will need the CDR-36M or later in a portable unit.
Make sure you have the latest NEC driver, available from their Tech support dept. at 1-800-fone-nec. It's version 2.24.

Actually, you can add termination power to any CD-ROM drive by taking a wire from the internal 5v supply, through a 1A protection diode, to the TERMPWR pin on your 50-pin connector. Any electronics technician should be able to do it in a few minutes.

Trantor will have NT drivers available for their cards around the time the NT Beta ships in late September. Microsoft wrote all the drivers for SCSi cards in the alpha, and they decided not to worry about 8-bit cards right away.
