#32807 #PStream and CG?> Message #33058
Bitmap graphics are handled differently in PGS than in ProPage. The pictures are stored in the main file, not separately. This means you need room for all the scans in ram. Now, this is somewhat limiting, unless you have loads of ram. (Just for interest, the scanned photograph in our…
There are NO problems with using both Hevletica and Triumvirate together. I think I must have about every variation of Helvetica on my system. However, don't install two identical weights or you might confuse things. Like, say you have CS Triumvirate normal installed, and you add Helvetica normal, well they're…
No, no, no, this is why we did things the way we did, to avoid confusing people. So after this post, let's forget this. If you have Helvetica in your printer, it will be used, because CS Triumvirate will give identical spacings and kernings and widths. No problems. If you…
Neil: that's just the way it is. SL Tech
#26356 SBPro4 v1.01 Update Message #26391
Strange, I got my upgrade to SB4 rather late, and I still got 1.0.
#32402 AmiDock Question Message #32480
Yes, you can put your icons on the WorkBench permanently, but AmiDock collects them all in a dock — you have to try it to see why it's worthwhile. SL Tech
I can understand your position, but you must understand ours Neil. We do not have the resources to supply Germany and the rest of Europe directly. We do not know the language or the laws and customs of the individual countries. We have to rely on other firms to sell…
Most beginners would not know the difference between Helvetica and Triumvirate. We don't advertise PageStream as shipping with Helvetica— we advertise CS Triumvirate. Making Helvetica appear separately would really confuse people and will not be done. If you need to do it, we will tell you how to do this…
Soft-Logik does not advertise in German magazines because Upgrade Editions sells our products in that country. We are currently advertising in AmigaWorld, Amazing Computing and Amiga Format, to name a few magazines. SL Tech
BTW, in another section I posted a correction. UK customers are supported from Soft-Logik in St.Louis. Upgrade Editions supports all other European customers. Sorry for the confusion. I believe the UK upgrade brochures went out quite a bit later than the US brochures to allow time to prepare separate masters.…
#32370 AmiDock Question Message #32380
From: Soft-Logik Tech Support Amiga User Forum · Personal Apps August 19, 1991 10:02 PM
If you need any help with AmiDock, this is the place to ask questions. While it is not a Soft-Logik product, it is written by one of our employees. It should be compatible with all Amiga software (except CLI scripts in the latest release I believe.) Some programs refuse to…
#31967 PStream and CG?> Message #32377
Jim: I assume your question referred to CG fonts. Bullet technology is the CG routines which are incorportated into PageStream and licensed from AGFA Compugraphic. PageStream is the only Amiga desktop publisher with Bullet technology. Other desktop publishers which use CG fonts use older and slower font technology. The outlines…
#31870 PStream and CG?> Message #32376
Gold Disk CG fonts DO work with PageStream. The CG Dingbats and Symbols fonts do NOT work because the character mapping is off. Another FONTSS is required. It is on the wishlist. Zapf Chancery does not work for some unknown reason. All other GD fonts are reported to work by…
Jim: as posted in this section somewhere, Art Expression will have built-in autotrace. SL Tech
Soft-Logik uses the DoubleTalk (localtalk compatible) system in-house with out any problems. You usually have to print a blank page to an Appletalk printer first (or any page, but it won't come out anyway.) As well, the chooser sometimes decides to stay visible permanently. These are probably problems with the…
#31842 #PStream Strife Message #31854
Jonathan: the problem lies in the formatting of the ascii text. Try both the paragraph has carriage return and line has carriage return options. One of them will usually import the text file without those extra carriage returns at the end of the text editor's lines. (PageStream line lengths will…
#31840 #PStream and CG?> Message #31848
Jim: yes, PageStream can use Compugraphic fonts. PageStream has the latest Compugraphic Bullet technology in it. PgS can use any Compugraphic Intellifont including those from Gold Disk. PageStream ships with ten Compugraphic fonts, including four weights of CS Times and two weights of CS Triumvirate, plus four weights of Garamond.…
If you are use a non-PostScript printer you should use the CS Triumvirate, not Helvetica, font. CS fonts print better to non-PostScript printers than PostScript fonts because only Compugraphic fonts are hinted to non-PS printers. We think the PageStream interface is very intuitive. Of course, if you read our 2.2…
Mike, well, that's sort of right. ProPage is using its own metric files to achieven equivalent Adobe spacing. I haven't tested it so I don't know if it succeeds, but you are then spacing a font differently from what is was designed for. That is, the CG font has different…
Gary, you're wrong on the Trium Helv eqiuvalency. Gold Disk ships CG Triumvirate (and CG Times) with Professional Page. That is not eqiuvalent to ITC Helvetica. We ship CS Triumvirate and CS Times with PageStream. It uses identical character size, spacing and kerning as the Adobe font. It was developed…
Yes, I would assume you are registered as a US customer. (This would be a lot easier if I worked at Soft-Logik directly, instead of for Soft-Logik from a few thousand miles away. Then I could just open the database and let you know!) SL Tech
Neil, you will have to forgive me but I'm not sure what country you live in. Upgrade Editions does indeed write its own manuals, but perhaps English language copies now use the American manual, I cannot say for sure. I know 1.8 had a separate English manual as opposed to…
#31190 Drawing Programs Message #31546
Craig: Art Expression from Soft-Logik does not have a release date set at this time. SL Tech
No, you cannot convert PS to CG format. The utility does not convert CG fonts into PS Type 1 outline fonts, but into Type 3 data files. These are not usable outlines, but downloadable files. SL Tech
The structured drawing program does not have a release date. It is called Art Expression. I cannot say anything about it, but can repeat the statement on it from AC's Guide: Art Expression is a full-featured outline illustration program. It allows artists and graphic designers to create complex, artistic illustrations…
Well, the fontequiv file is what makes Helv, Helvetica and Triumvirate equal. If you are doing PostScript work, don't change things, you'll only mess it up. This is because Helvetica and CS Triumvirate are identical for all intents and purposes. Now if you have Helvetica Black, you may not want…
I'm sorry, I don't recall our conversation regarding your registration. (Too many questions on CIS, GEnie and the SL BBS gets to me.) You registered as a US customer originally? From whom are you getting upgrade notices? SL Tech
Neil: UE does not use Soft-Logik's documentation; they write their own manuals. As well, the European edition may/may not come with different drivers, different spelling/hyphenation drivers etc… SL Tech
If you have suggestions for the manual, please email them to this account. (Email is better than posting it here because it will be captured for printing.) We are always interested in improving the manual. One thing I would like to add sometime would be a reference chart to show…
Soft-Logik BBS # is 314-894-0057. It's listed in the inside front cover of your 2.1 manual. (If you don't have the 2.1 manual you can buy it for $25 I believe. It is really worth the money. You will find PgS has more features than you know about. The 1.8/2.0…
Neil: it sounds like your afm files are not being recognized. Check in the font manager. Click on the font drawer you have already added. Do the afm files show up in the right selector? If not, they are not being recognized and were not transferred properly. If you can't…
#31061 Screenplays Message #31110
Supposedly the best one for this is ProWrite. I think one of the mags said something about it being able to have two columns side by side which were linked across so that descriptions would stay with the appropriate blocks. I could be wrong about which program it was.
I will ask the boss about this. SL Tech
#31089 PgS Print Function Message #31108
That's right. The best way to save time is to print to disk (ram preferably) and copy it to the port (ie: copy file par:). Then go back to work. SL Tech
#31046 PgS Print Function Message #31107
This has been asked for many times. A separate print utility would not be much smaller than PgS so it is not deemed worth the effort. SL Tech
OK, I thought you meant you wanted to look at the doc file itself. The boss said no to handing out the doc format. I took a look at the PS output file and it is supposed to list the document fonts, the supplied fonts and the needed fonts. Unfortunately,…
You don't need a utility to do that. Get the AFM and screen font and PgS will do the rest. It will automatically access your printers' outlines if you don't supply a PFB. Forced italic or bolds only happen if you select a font style for which there is no…
Gary: I know, I know, bolding and slanting just doens't cut it. But for some users it's better than 100K PS files. (Just buy a QMS410 with internal Garamond 🙂 I'm not sure what the GD utility is, I've never tried it. Anybody know what the utility is called to…
font equiv editing is not for the faint of heart. You need to know a bit about some stuff which we haven't published yet. Please hold on, the master is writing something up. There will be a new fontequiv file distributed with 2.2 which should solve most of your problems…
I do all my small (2MB and under) transfers over modem. However, when we do large work (try a 35 meg file…) we print to disk on a 3000, transfer to Mac hard drive with mac2dos, and take the hard drive to the service bureau. SL Tech
Craig, all the old Soft-Logik (PgS) format fonts work fine. (Those with DMF/FM/##H or ##I extensions.) Read the manual section where it says to delete their .PS and .PSF files to save disk space, and to delete large bitmap sizes. SL Tech
When we did the 2.1 manuals we looked at all the mac and pc manuals (skipped the amiga and atari manuals) and tried to decide what was best about each. The writing of some mac manuals is superb, but as you mention, the new user doesn't know where to start…
Craig: not likely! I'm still learning how to send msgs on here. (I'm a longtime user of the competition.) If I try to forward files, who knows where they will end up! 🙂 SL Tech
Paul: thanks for replying. You just saved me a lot of typing! The import dpi=xxx, yyy currently only works with a picture window. You can't import it as an object (or the dpi=xxx, yyy will get ignored.) This is a known bug. Why do we have to do this anyway? Because, when…
No, you have the current driver. The super/sub script bug in the WP import module was not previously reported. I'll put it on the list. Thanks, SL Tech
oops, this is to Mike Todd, forgot to reply on the previous message: Mike: the letters CS are screened out of the alphabetical sorting in the font requester so that you would find times under T instead of C. I think CG and ITC are also screened. SL Tech
Paul: the time required to open the font requester in 2.1 is a function of two things: number of fonts installed, plus the contents of the fontequiv. The font requester is sorting the fonts every time you open the requester. As already stated, this will be changed in 2.2 so…
Mike: it t'wasn't in the manual because I didn't know about it until later 🙂 The font requester will open at normal speed in 2.2. It has been changed in the Atari version of 2.1. SL Tech
Mike: you know you can change the font and not the size, and the size and not the font, and the style and not the font or size, etc…, just by clearing the non-applicable fields. Just Amiga-X or Esc the fields you don't want to change. SL Tech
Chris: the font manager window is the current size because that's the max for non-interlace mode. Sure you can install a font drawer more than once, but it doesn't matter. PgS will ignore it. (Yes, it should delete the old one, but…). What do you mean by sort alphabetically? The…
