#192959 3DS benchmark Message #193000
That's interesting… I've only tried it on 3 different machines, but it worked on all three, so I'd concluded that it was a general rule-of-thumb. Thanx for the info! SCL
#192923 3DS benchmark Message #192930
You're right, I was talking about a co-processor-type accelerator, not a video "accelerator" card. If those had anything to do with rendering speed, I'm sure EVERYBODY would like to hear about that!!! Liquid Speed doesn't help rendering, either, in my experience, as I've run the same machine without, then with,…
#192887 Benchmark standard Message #192904
Hi, Anne, Amazing the response that's been rolling in, isn't it! Is compiling all the responses into one document for the library something you could, would, or would LIKE to do, or should I try? We've gotten usable data on everything from my DX2/66 to P120s, and I really think…
#192877 #3DS benchmark Message #192902
Rick, I just saw you're using QEMM — did you see the exchange between Martin and I where we were discussing a separate boot menu item bypassing QEMM (if you don't have more than 64 megs)? I do that for big renders and gain about an extra meg available to…
#192867 #3DS benchmark Message #192899
Thanx again Rick; I'm sure the pipelined burst cache helps, too, but that 60NS RAM sure don't hurt! As of this writing, you've got a P100 that runs with the 120s! (Haven't gotten any numbers from a 133 yet) Have you got some kind of graphic accelerator card in that…
#192874 #Prepurchase MAX? Message #192898
Oh, a WISE GUY, ay!!! I bet you know how to stop somebody from poking you in the eye, too!!! :%) (nyuk, nyuk!)
#Prepurchase MAX? Message #192853
PMJI, but Kevin, what's this about pre-purchase of MAX? Did I get dropped from some registered users list at Adesk and not get some crucial notification? Is my dealer ignoring me? Am I to be PUNISHED just for missing Siggraph? Did I miss some bargain price on the upgrade? BTW,…
#192434 Sky .SXP map Message #192781
Re the palette question, high = 24-bit images for each frame, then cut to best 256 (may be salvageable) medium = 256 colors saved, then optimized to find the best 256 to represent the whole FLC; Definitely not salvageable (I've tried and couldn't, at least) low = palette defined by…
#192701 KPT/Win95 Message #192726

Thanx for the info! I haven't bothered with Win95 yet, but that's certainly something to keep in mind!
#192581 #THE Perfect System Message #192715
From: Stephen C. Levy Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Take 5/Want Ads September 26, 1995 7:14 PM
That's exactly the conundrum I'm finding myself in! Micron is advertising a dual-133 configuration that would come in right around five figures set up as a dedicated rendering slave (small monitor, plain vanilla video card, SCSI w/2gigs, 4x cd-rom but forget the audio stuff, and 128 megs o' RAM). That…
#192622 #3DS benchmark Message #192705
Thanks for your most-impressive numbers! Hate to be a pest, but when you've got time could you run it one more time, with METAL shading? On my machine, that only adds a few seconds — I wonder what about your machine is making it so fast — if you've been…
#192572 #3DS benchmark Message #192697
Thanx, Martin! Yes, I'm aware that memory managers slow things down — I use QEMM for Winstuff and normal 3DS, but when I've got a big render, I have a special boot menu selection that loads a minimal EVERYTHING low — Not even using himem.sys or EMM386 — Phar Lap…

PMJI, but WCT is the World Creating Toolkit CD-ROM that comes with 3DS. About your statement regarding KPT, do you mean that you're now running Photoshop 3 under Win95, but KPT doesn't work (under Win95)? SCL
#192459 #3DS benchmark Message #192511
Oops; guess it's been so long since I saw a "virgin" 3DS.SET that my memory's slipping… thanx for your input; if we can get large number of responses, the results should be interesting…
#192356 Speed testing Message #192458
Thanx, Anne! Reading tests in the magazines, it's hard to figure out what the REAL improvements are under 3DS. This seems to be the best way of getting a wide variety of samples — Now, the trick is gonna be to keep 'em from CHEATING for the sake of bragging…
#192373 #3DS benchmark Message #192443
Martin, Good catch! I checked, and Pixel Size is NOT one of the settings saved with 3DS files. Since we're trying to come up with a "standard," and 3DS.SET defaults to a Pixel Size of 1.2, that setting sounds good to me for these testing purposes. The more numbers we…
#192244 #download problem Message #192303
From: Stephen C. Levy Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Take 5/Want Ads September 24, 1995 4:16 AM
Where you got the .000 extension is by marking the file FOR downloading (thereby "reserving" the space for it) but not actually DOING the download. After having marked it, you need to go to the LIBRARY pulldown and select "Retrieve marked files". While it has the .000 extension, "there ain't…
#192281 3DS benchmark Message #192302
Yes, I'm well aware of the speed improvements, having worked at places with Pentiums. Actually, I'm just waiting for the P150 to debut to make my move. But I'm also elaborating on your idea and trying to get a standard 3DS benchmark established so anyone can compare their rendering speed…
#192226 MAPPING FLC FILES Message #192258
Have you tried just letting 3DS pick the palette (Medium mode) to see what happens? — Sounds to me like your custom palette might be a possible source of problems. You got me curious; pls let me know what happens, or how you solve it. SCL
#Speed testing Message #192252
Anne, What do you think of the possibility of compiling all the numbers from these speed test threads and posting it in the Hware library, with occasional updates — it could become an on-going project and become a really useful tool, particularly when all the NT hardware starts being used…
#192198 demo on floppies??? Message #192250
From: Stephen C. Levy Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Take 5/Want Ads September 23, 1995 8:07 PM
There's a program called Smacker that, at a low rez, MIGHT be able to fit 1 min @ 12FPS on one floppy, particularly if you're just using a solid-color background (fewer changing pixels). It has its own player that comes with it. SCL
#192031 #3DS benchmark Message #192190
Just for the sake of comparison, I rendered CHEVY.3DS @ 640×480, all defaults per the 3DS file, on my DX2/66 w/32 megs. It took 5:16 — gotta get a new box!!!!!
Don't know if ytou've seen it, but Micron is advertising a dual P133 set-up that, appropriately configured for MAX, would barely crack the 5-figure mark.
#191762 #TRUE TYPE FONTS Message #191913
From: Stephen C. Levy Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Take 5/Want Ads September 21, 1995 12:56 AM
There was a shareware Windows app called Fontstudio 3D on here a few months ago. It extruded .TTFs with or without bevels. We used it at a place I was working and it worked fine, .DXF output direct into 3DS. I think the file was called F3D134.zip or something similar.…

No, No, No! You ALL got it wrong! The name of the P7 is going to be Pentium MAX!!!
Terry, PMJI, but do you still have one of those PVRs? I'm seriously interested… if so, e-mail me with details … got my Visa in my hot little hand! BTW, I've been following a thread here talking about clearance problems fitting all those PCI cards. Is this just a problem…

Yes, I called them about a month ago (just curious, you understand) and I also got the impression it was a sleazeball operation, fast-talking phone salesman and all. Could be legit, I suppose, but after five minutes on the phone with this guy (Who didn't seem to know what 3DS…

Thanx! I'll file that away in my trove of work-around lore. SCL
PMJI, but I've got two Graphics ProTurbos, both 2meg, and they work just fine! One is VESA on my 486/66, the other is PCI/P90. There is (or should still be) a file called antive.zip on this board that's to fix a little bug in the PCI drivers. But then maybe…

Yes, that's about the same method I thought of as well. Didn't know about the bug in Shields, tho. When I bought that book, I just copied *.?XP into my Process path — Haven't ever actually used that one, so that's good to know. Thanx for the tip! SCL

Yeah, you may've seen the thread about how most IPAS effects CAN be done the hard way. Looked to me like that one could be duplicated with animated maps, but maybe it's easier. In my early days of 3DS, before I got into IPAS collecting, I used 180 omni lites…

Thanx! This is the first I've heard of the Triton2 chipset. Perhaps I'll get on the Web and see what I can turn up on Intel's home page. I'll let you know if I find anything interesting/pertinent! SCL

Yes, I've played with machines running the same dual-boot configuration you're talking about. Perhaps I was insufficiently clear previously, but what I was asking about was whether, running NT on Alpha(s), apps needed a total recompile to run at all, or was it just an optimization issue to get the…

Aaaaaah, yes, but one of the dirty little secrets we are about to face is the fact that your apps under NT must be optimized for different CPUs. While it is likely, I hear, that a MAX for Alpha will be released, such has not been announced. Not being seriously…

National Geographic did a poster-size moon map, I think in the mid-70s. You might contact them to see if it's still available.

I haven't actually tried EDO yet; I'm trusting the veracity of PC Magazine (and others) test reports, which claim something like a 10% improvement — maybe 10 seconds off a two-minute frame render, if they're accurate, but to my mind, every little bit helps! What you're saying gives me pause,…
#190258 THE Perfect System Message #190394
From: Stephen C. Levy Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Take 5/Want Ads September 12, 1995 1:34 AM
I've been researching the "perfect" system, with the hope of buying one that could take me through at least the first year of MAX. It appears that this "perfect" system does not yet exist because the only chipset that supports the new, faster EDO memory is the Triton chipset, and…

After reading your announcement, I am left with the impression that AXPs invoked in the Object Attributes dialog box are NOT supported. Is this true?
#181212 LA 3DS pro seeks work Message #181398
Thanks, Nancy, when I get a little more organized I just may do that (post on your publication, I mean.) I've already sent a resume to Edge, and for now my first priority is to polish the ol' reel. Thanks again for your interest.
Kelly, thanks for your interest, but I'm in Glendale and a 100+ mile daily round trip would, methinks, get old fast. But if it starts to look like all the good jobs are in OC, I may conclude that I have to relocate, so I'll definitely keep you in mind.…

That's exactly what I'm trying to do… disremember it! Evidently I'm not the only former typographer who saw a better, brighter future in 3DS than in Quark and Pagemaker et al!
Sorry, didn't mean to sound so pedantic… What I did was primarily typesetting, proofreading and paste-up — towards the end, some pretty high-quality stuff, including the Lexus print ads everyone was holding up as examples of how good type could be. The equipment and methods used up until Mac-based publishing…
#LA 3DS pro seeks work Message #180588
To me, traditional typography began with hot metal and includes photo-electronic type, hand-set phototype and their associated photo-mechanical processes (like paste-up and stat cameras).
