#12632 #Forensic Stuff Message #12660
You probably showed him/her the Mitchell Bros. murder animation by Alec Jason. But, if not, its on the World Creation toolkit cd rom in the samples\flics\flis\forensic directory. Really gripping stuff, knowing it actually happened makes it even more poignant. I wonder what the victim was saying while his brother was…
#12593 No ASG Architectural Message #12647
Well, I tried it and found it to be quite an adrenalin rush. The Golden Gate bridge up in your neck of the woods was, I believe, the site of one of the first bungee-jumps by my friends in "the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club". Definetly chaps after my own…
It is 3D Studio release 2 – the latest version.
#12379 #Anim PRO &OS/2 GA Message #12645
Animator Pro uses the Phar-lap Dos extender, which supports VCPI. Autodesk has a policy not to discuss future releases of software, so trying to find out if animator pro will be ported to other platforms will like pulling teeth, only a lot harder!
#12528 Video of Animation Message #12569
It's actually quite popular among 3ds people I know in So Cal. I have a copy and watch it every now and again, for inspiration.
Try bungee-jumping attached by your ankles. That should straighten out your spine especially if the cords have lost their elasticity!
#12479 #What's in 3D? Message #12567
Check the Yost Group (Jack's) reply for the definitive statement about the Autodesk product line, or at least some of what they sell. More importantly I was fairly pleased that the Tories won office again, since I would have voted for them, but, I'm more inclined towards the democrats over…
#12489 "play" and animation Message #12566
I'm sorry, I meant for the interactive scripting you cannot specify mouse co-ordinates for input. Example: I write a script where the user clicks on icons to play animations of whatever the icon depicts. Does the scripting in anipro support that?
Play is available in the libraries here. I don't know which but it is. It's probably play07.zip or similar. Animator, Animator Pro also have animation players included with them but aren't necessarily better than Trilobyte's which has mouse support, Autodesk's don't. There are lot's of other software which support the…
#12154 targa pics Message #12467
Rock, split.exe and combine.exe are shareware utilities which are used for splitting up large files over several volumes of diskettes. Combine puts the pieces back together again when copying back to hard disk. They are probably downloadable from CIS somewhere. I have 'em but don't remember where I got 'em.
There was a limited time upgrade, for registered users of Animator back in July/August of last year. I'm fairly certain it's over now and Animator was even replaced by Autodesk's Multimedia Explorer, so you must have bought an unsold copy. Animator Pro is only sold through Autodesk Authorized Multimedia dealers…
#12416 #What's in 3D? Message #12427
Phil, I think we need to clear up our terminology, here, so that we are talking about the same products. Autodesk is the software company not a product. They have several multimedia products: Animator (which has since become "Multimedia Explorer") which was a 2d paint and animation package limited to…
#12172 #What's in 3D? Message #12372
How you do Phil? I'm an English chap living in L.A.,California and a 1 year veteran user of 3d studio. It is a standalone product with everything you need to model 3d objects, create and apply materials, create and edit cameras and lights, animate them all and view them. It…
Is that RCPADI driver for Targa+ available now? I would definetly like to get hold of it for use with 3ds2 if/when it's ready.
Roger, You seem to be having more than your fair share of hardware/software conflicts! When I tried to install Soundblaster in my 486/33 the motherboard blew up! There is a QEMM386 command I used which seemed to solve some of my conflicts: EXCLUDE=C000-DFFF I think this prevents any software from…
#12321 #Video Machine Message #12369
Wow, I got a headache trying to read that!. BTW are you British, or from the Commonwealth? The reason I say that is you spelt "Colour" correctly, like I do. (I'm English living in So. Cal.)
#12340 #Demo version r2 Message #12368
Good idea Kevin. That should probably clear this up.
I agree with you on your comments. However, there is a way to substitute for lack of artistic talents: teamwork. Many animators may work in a vacuum, but I compensate for my lack of (or insufficient) production and artistic talents by teaming up with experienced video producers/writers etc. In this…
#12315 animator timing Message #12319
Yes Jack should take a month off too. And, certainly all the programmers too, whose efforts get less applause since they work "behind the scenes". We will all try mightily to cover for you.
#12182 #Demo version r2 Message #12318
I wish we could straighten this out, since I suspect an ex-autodesk multimedia dealer (who shall remain nameless) of recieving a demo/reseller/review copy (or whatever dealers recieve) and fully intending to use it for commercial gain in a big way. I'm not going to blow the whistle on them but…
Kevin, I know of one in Irvine, CA, called (aptly) Irvine Photo Graphics which will do .tga to negative or slides. They seem to have the latest and greatest equipment and are always extremely busy. I suggest putting them in your Rolodex for all your Orange County customers: Irvine Photo…
How can you do command line/batch rendering of .vp (video post) files? I looked through the reference manual and the index and couldn't find any mention. Hoping I've missed something, Martin
Believe me Greg, without going into details, Hollyweird has already taken notice of 3ds and is considering using it for more "major" projects!
#12060 #Demo version r2 Message #12105
Is it legal for a dealer to use a "demo" or "reseller's" copy of 3ds version 1 or 2 for production/commercial gain? If it is not, I think that is unfair to the people who actually buy the product, just as it is unfair if people pirate the product.
You can apply a two-sided material to the boxes to compensate for flipped face normals, or display, geometry, all lines and see if the black triangles conform to any of those faces. If so, do a surface, normal, face flip. This is a little tedious but it can avoid the…
John, do you know anything about updated ADI 4.1 drivers for the Irisvision 24 bit board? My friend has one and it worked fine with 3ds r1 but would not do 24 bit with release 2.
#11942 #BIG HARD DRIVES? Message #12016
The problem I have heard of with rendering straight to tape is wear on the actual tape, not so much the heads. Your heads are staying on the same spot until time runs out and they go to the park-point. (3 mins default, I believe). This wears the tape out…
Good question. I don't know about merging vp files. I'll have a go but I doubt it's supported. Maybe Gary of Jack could answer that?
I agree with Kevin Krell. For what you just described the paint package will probably do it.
Somehow working with lawyers doesn't "appeal" to me, anyway! (pun intended)
#11882 AniPro 640×480 Message #11895
Good question Rick, I'm sure the Yost Group could answer that one better than I. I suggest trying it and if you can get that display resolution with your card at all then go for it. The only problem I can imagine is when you load some of the images…
#11848 3DS questions Message #11894
James I have 2 suggestions, If you are limited to 256 colours you may improve the image by setting dither to ON in the system options. (or in the 3ds.set if you're on v1) This is fine for stills but if you are doing animations they can get VERY big…
You can capture images with from any video source with various frame grabbers, like the targa+ series (my choice), and then you can use the resultant image file (.tga .tif .gif etc) as a texture map or background or whatever, but to do serious "what-if" manipulations you will probably need…
#11879 3DS vs Topaz Message #11892
'Fraid I don't know, Grahame.
Looks like I missed an opportunity there, Gary. Oh well, that's what happens when your the quiet type. Course, I would have had to rework my version of the beating to be forensically accurate, but it just goes to show that no thought is original – someone else is probably…
Get yourself a network of diskless 486/50's, sufficient memory on each one, and a server with huge hard disk and other mass media. Most cost effective way to do it and when some bright spark writes a utility to split up the rendering transparently over the network, it will be…
#11791 #AniPro 640×480 Message #11815
You cannot get super vga with only 256k. You need at least 512k and preferably 1Mb to achieve super vga resolutions. With 256k you can only get standard vga 320×200 256 colours, remember anipro needs a 256 colour mode. I suggest you get a vesa compatible super vga card with…
#11746 #Removable media Message #11814
What is this mythical product? I know of no such thing, at least not available retail. The LVR5000 uses analog recording not digital so no possibility of data storage. I suppose you could store images on it and then capture them back onto disk when needed but since it's not…
I agree Noah. The downside of the fabulous new Video Post module, although very minor and greatly offset by potential savings and capabilities, is that disk space will probably need to be increased since we'll be storing many more .tga sequences than before. Fortunately, I've gone the SCSI controller route…
Bryan, 3ds is being using for every type of simulation you can imagine plus some you probably can't. I use it for corporate video product visualization, character animation for commercials, architectural visualization, logos, and anything anybody asks me to do. It is capable of producing broadcast-quality animation and also very…
#11755 #Third Party 3D Message #11811
I have used some of Viewpoint's meshes in my projects and I like them, but my only problem was they weren't sufficiently detailed (the camaro, freebie mesh for example) so I had to build a complete interior for it. BTW, I believe I read your article last year and that…
My goodness, we must be having parallel thoughts, here! I just answered the same thread by quoting from the manual too! Amazing! Course, not quite to the same degree, but interesting point. (to me at least). I'm very keen to see some off the shelf IPAS applications come out, but…
#11733 486DX/33 and 4067 Message #11747
No sir, Animator Pro does not require a Weitek 4167 (not 4067) to run (it's optional for 3d studio) and I don't think the package is even optimized to use the weitek either. (Correct me if I'm wrong, chaps). I did check the anipro "installation and performance guide" and saw…
Paint Package 4 sale Message #11741
Is that version of Lumena compatible with the TARGA+ 16/32 frame buffer? If so, I'd like to know if you would sell the paint package alone, and for how much.
#11668- 3DS vs Topaz Message #11740
3DS is $2995, Topaz is $7995, but more importantly I have a friend who owns both and now, with 3ds version 2 out, does not see the justification of the extra $5k. In fact, he'll probably be selling Topaz if your interested. I'm not knocking Topaz because it might well…
Why thank you Garag Jost, lost prince of the Mark Ting empire. I still feel I have only just scratched the surface of video post's capabilities. I can certainly see how it might save me money on post production special effects, like DVE moves. It can also avoid the necessity…
#11728 3DS vs Topaz Message #11738
Lucky you got in first, Kevin, because I didn't know. Or, at least, I might have quoted the old, higher price. Didn't they just lower the price for some strange reason? My Truevision Solutions Source Book says $11,995 for the Animator including the Pro-modeler.
"… IPAS is a programming interface interface that lets you use the C programming language to customize … 3d studio with external processes". You need a Watcom or Metaware compiler which is compatible with the Phar-lap dos extender and also the IPAS developers kit. I'm considering getting into this myself…
Dear all, Just wanted to share an experience I had with the new Video Post module in 3dsr2 which has left me very impressed and eager to try more tricks. I am just completing a 30 second fully animated commercial for local cable (wish it was national). The final scene…
