#10307 CNN 3DS reminder Message #10321
Come on now, Gary needs time to freshen and slip into something more comfortable!
#10292 3DS release 2 Message #10320
Gary Yost just said shipment was planned for March 23rd, but I don't know if that means dealers will have it for sale then. Also, tentative shipment dates have been known to be missed….
#10293 Cheap Video Message #10319
Thanks for the tip, buck. I'll be sending my demo-tape to NBC shortly. Wow! $1000 to $2000 per finished second! I dream of that kind of fee!
I know what you mean, Alec. Mesh building can be tedious, so there will probably always be a market for ready-made or custom mesh building companies, like Viewpoint and Technical Designs. I certainly have and will buy stuff from them, also. Sometimes, however, my client's budget does not extend to…
#10299 Cheap Video output Message #10317
Most of my clients are happy with frame-by-frame output to 3/4" SP, although I'm not. I don't think I got VCR and VTR mixed up? Was your message for Buck Crowley?
#10304 Using Ani Pro Message #10316
I don't think the 50 hours is necessarily that bad. I did the tutorials first and I think they took quite a while, especially with experimentation. Did you say you had completed the tutorials? I also use 3d studio and, even though I've had it for a year and use…
You can create seperate objects of the finger joints in the 3D Editor by "selecting" the faces you want for that part of the finger, doing the CREATE,FACE,DETACH operation, with the SELECTED button ON. This creates an object which you name. Then do the hierarchy link operation in the KEYFRAMER…
#10260 #NCGA Gathering Message #10269

Sounds OK to me, except the show ends at 5pm, so I wonder if half the participants will be conscious by 7 pm?
#10256 CD Drives??????????? Message #10268
It's $5. Contact: Nimbus Information Systems Charlottesville VA 22906. USA 800-782-0778 804-985-1100 I have no personal relationship with this company, I just contributed some of my early stuff. However, I can recommend it highly, especially at that price!
#10127 PRODUCT INFORMATION Message #10138
From: MARTIN G FOSTER Autodesk Software Forum · General March 4, 1992 12:46 PM
Welcome to the forum Paul, Animator has been replaced by 2 products "Explorer" which is similar to the original (320×200 res) and "Animator Pro" which will do SVGA and higher resolutions depending on your VGA board. You do need a 386/486 class of machine for the latter, however, and it…

From: MARTIN G FOSTER Autodesk Software Forum · General March 4, 1992 12:46 PM
That's right Wednesday is the 11th, Thursday is the 12th. I was just quoting from a message by Doug Wolfgram who also got the date wrong. Well, I don't have the agenda so Doug? Gary? Which is it?
#10121 CD Drives??????????? Message #10126
This is a CD-ROM compilation of computer graphics, animations etc. put together by Phil and Nimbus Records. Non-commercial, it was to be given away at Conventions etc. Many of this forum's members contributed, including myself.

There's the 3ds experts meeting on Wed, 12th 3:30-5:00pm hosted by Doug Wolfgram, I think. You might find some 3ds ne'erdowells at that, including myself. Bring a bottle!

Probably wrong forum. Try GO ACAD at the ! prompt.
#10116 #Cheap Video output Message #10123
How about using the really, really, really high-end format – 70mm film at 16k resolution… Now were talking! Isn't funny how the best format (ok, it's not video) is actually old technology….
#10111 3DS vs Lightwave Message #10115
anoied? I'll bet they were! As I recently said, I just win a contract bidding against 2 animation houses. One had Symbolics and one Wavefront …. oh well
#10086- 3DS vs Lightwave Message #10095
Thanks for the inside info. I'm trying to do a 3d cartoon character myself right now. He's sort of a barfly type of guy like Norm in "Cheers", but exaggerated for effect. I'm not sure whether to try and modify him from one of the 3d-people or use parts of…
#10089 3D-Studio books Message #10094
As Jeff Hester suggested, I believe (and he may have a particular interest here), you should call New Riders Publishing. There orders/customer service line is (800)541-6789.
I don't think that matters too much, since the eyes seem pretty forgiving in many respects. I have seen stereo 35mm slides from real life scenes where everything (foreground and background) is in sharp focus, the camera probably using a high f-stop (f22 possibly) and my eyes had no problem…
#9973 #Upfront… Message #9990
Ray Dream Designer is a 3d rendering package for the Macintosh (uses ray tracing). It is not meant for animation. I just saw it demoed at the Media '92 convention in L.A. at which I was a guest speaker (for 3d Studio). It seems to have plenty of competition on…

#9962 A Few Questions Message #9983
From: MARTIN G FOSTER Autodesk Software Forum · General February 28, 1992 9:01 PM
1. try PIXELPOP which comes with animator pro, see the documentation (I have never used it) 2. Sure, you can combine .flc and .tga animations, just keep an eye on matching resolutions and aspect ratios. 3. .flc animations will be limited to a maximum of 256 colours (8 bit), whereas…
The Yost Group recently said on this forum that they will be able to talk about release 2 after NCGA (march 9th-) but not yet.
#9934 #Drilling Holes Message #9981
Me too. One has to be careful about what one says when it comes to talking about new releases. Don't want to piss off the powers_that_be!
I just saw the videotape of the Alec Jason animation, courtesy Bob Bennett, at the Media '92 conference in LA. Wow! Did that elicit some gasps from the audience. I was a guest speaker at the convention and had a chance to show my demo tape to a pretty large…
Weitek 4167/33 for sale. 30% speed improvement on 486/33 renderings. Paid $1200 9 months ago. Offers?
Yes you're right. I just used a 50mm lense back then, but now I would probably set the lenses for 80 degrees. I don't know how significant this is but the 50mm lenses worked ok.
Well, I tried this about 1 year ago but with 35mm slides and it worked! I set my two cameras up equidistant from a point in the scene. The targets were at the same co-ordinate and the cameras were 2 1/2" apart (set up your units as architectural and use…
#9790 sony vo-9850\ Message #9807
I used that deck for my demo-tape but I agree with Kevin that it's probably not up to snuff for broadcast work. I used it for cable commercials, too, where 3/4" SP is considered standard.
#9754 Animation Marketing Message #9756
I think it could go both ways, there. Frequently the client knows exactly what they want and it's just a matter of deciding how long it will take you to do and then multiplying that by your hourly rate to come up with a bid. Or saying that's 10 seconds…
#9682 #free tape transfers Message #9721
Did you mention you were looking at buying a SONY LVR5000 video disk system. Wow, if you get that then you'll have all the high-end equipment. I haven't bought any video equipment as it's hard enough for me to keep up with my computer equipment needs.
#9675 Animation Marketing Message #9720
I have done commercials for various cable station advertisers in the Los Angeles/Orange County area and also animation for corporate videos for training, trade shows etc. I haven't done anything for network TV though. Most cable advertisers don't have much in the way of advertising budgets, though, so if they…
#9673 Animation Marketing Message #9719
I don't suppose that helps if you have .tgas?

#9632 free tape transfers Message #9636
Have you noticed a significant difference between 756x486x24 and 512x486x24? Does the former look sufficiently better to justify the added rendering time and disk space consumed?
#9610 Animation Marketing Message #9635
I freelance for a CADD company and they charge $100-$400 per finished second to tape depending on complexity. I get half of this. If I solicit my own clients I try and charge $50 per hour but I'm pretty slow and tend to tweak things for hours, so that's not…
#9548 Targa 16 rendering Message #9602
I may not be considered one of the "experts" on this forum but I would like to give you some hints based on my experiences – plus many of the part timers will be off the forum til Monday. I'll answer the last paragraph first. You can render to disk…

#9565 free tape transfers Message #9600
I really liked your companies animation (Xtree one) which I saw over at CAD Ventures in Newport Beach, CA. Nice job!
#9595- Alec's in the News! Message #9599
Whoa, dude! That sounds most triumphant! Can't wait to see the animation – that's the kind of application that's right up my alley…
#9368- Animation Marketing Message #9532
If you mean how much is charged for laying sequential .tgas to tape, then I know companies who charge $50 per finished second, some who charge $1 per .tga file, and one which charges $40 per hour – the latter being by far the cheapest. There was also somebody on…
Tell me more about that package, please . I'm not familiar with it.

How about a 24-bit version of AA Pro. Or a 24-bit paint package. I like AA Pro a lot but it would be even better if it could deal with full-color.
I have a 4167/33 weitek that I might trade for some equipment. My possible wishlist includes: A good 24-bit paint package A vtr controller A big,big hard disk A DAT backup drive A bare-bones 486/33 no weitek necessary An RGB/svhs/NTSC monitor BORLAND C++ IMAGECELS on CD-ROm Corel-draw on CD-ROM If…
Photofinish Message #8371
From: MARTIN G FOSTER Autodesk Software Forum · General January 27, 1992 10:41 PM
Has anybody tried the new Photofinish windows product from ZSoft? I just bought it on 30 day approval from Egghead and although I haven't gone in to the nitty-gritty and limitations it seems like it might be a good 24-bit paint package alternative and for only $140. You can't beat…
From: MARTIN G FOSTER Autodesk Software Forum · General January 27, 1992 10:37 PM
Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried painting it in AAPro and temporarily given up. However, after your suggestion and the fact that nobody else offered me a simple way out, I tried again and came up with a nice painted texture which I thought was OK and the client…
My suggestion for trees uses a slightly different approach. Create a 2d shape roughly corresponding to the outline geometry of the tree. Assign it and bring it into the 3d-editor. Do planar surface mapping onto this object, straight on. Now prepare your material with the texture map of the tree…

Does anyone have a nice brushed aluminum texture-map (with that brushed effect – aka striations) which I could have/purchase. I have the imagecels vol 1 & 2 which have everything but this kind of seamless texture, of course. It would be nice also if it could be seamless/tileable. If any…
That's great but, alas, we always yearn for more speed within a short time!
