I have done this type of visualization for an interior that had no less that 15 different color schemes and the modeling package I used was 3D STudio. Michael Bartlett – AEtherium Visions
Don't forget the 3Deamon Omnicomp on that list. mb
Hey Alan, great job reporting about the SIGGRAPH floor. Sorry I couldn't make your AMMEDia Party. Looks like it is going to be an epic year, 1996, for our group of animation kids. Michael B.
Nik, I am a registered user, paying member of the club, and as of today I too have not received any invite. Something is wrong. Michael Bartlett – AEtherium Visions
OOPS! Please accept my apologies. My comment was not meant to suggest that New Zealand had slow postal service. In fact I have never heard anything but good things about New Zealand. In fact, I hear that you actually have to know someone before they will even let you come…
As it turns out I have had to cancel plans to attend as of this afternoon. I am disappointed that I will not get to see your presentation of the new baby. Best wishes for a great show. Michael B.
From where, New Zealand? I am in Sausalito and haven't seen anything yet? Michael B.
Either T1 or a cable modem setup. Of course the only reasonable choice right now is T1, if you can justify that as reasonable. Thanks for the reality check Gus. It is never-the-less an idea that has enticed me for a long time. Thanks to John for pointing it out.…
>>It's the only program I've found that successfully combined a pixel "paint" program with an object "drawing" program. Yes, and I, for one was really hoping that AAS would pick up this paradigm. Michael B.
Composer has now officially reached cult status. It will live on like a martyr with honored status on hard drives where it has found a home. Mine will be in use for a long time to come. Lets just hope that the Bill doesnt't buy Autodesk. Michael Bartlett – AEtherium…
#CALAB to FLIC?
Message #174646
Brian, I came across an old copy of CALAB and was playing around with it and was wondering if you know of any way or anyone who might know how to convert the *.cat movie file format to flic or numbered files? The *.cat is a compressed movie file format…
Well, it sure sounds like the roar of some white water down the river. It must be the NT rapids. Thanks for all the thoughts. Jeremy, Brian, and Nik. I have just placed my order for NT. Michael B.
>>Have you tried the player that ships with Animator Studio? Nope. I just received a copy and haven't had time to install it yet. Has this player been compiled at 32 bits? You must have some suspicion about this. Can you share your reasoning? As soon as I try it…
Flic play under NT?
Message #173172
Can anyone offer any suggestions for playing flics under Windows NT. Apparently, the AAWINPLA does not perform properly. Any help with suggestions or work arounds will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. Michael B.
Brian, No, didn't try stripping the system, but I suspected that there may be some MCI contention which might be causing the memory to not be clearing properly. There have been other strange crashes on this system which also seemed to be memory related. However, I won't be able to…
WINPLA / odd resolutions
Message #164748
Brian, Can you tell me if there are resolution limitations for playing flics in Windows? As you know AniPro will let you play animations at all sorts of odd resolutions, odd being anything but 320×200, 640×480, etc. I recently had an animation rendered at 467×304 with a Windows palette that…
Hi Michele, You might want to check out Hooked here in San Francisco. They have several solutions for people like you who travel around alot. First, the software interface they use, Pipeline, supports remote logins. Second, there is the X25 Compuserve connection which allows you to dial in through a…
OK, Brian, Jonas, Thanks for the clarification. Everybody seems to have turf to protect, hence sticky tricky file format specifications for Adobe EPS files. Anyway, it is good to be able to output EPS files from 3DS. It is great to have such good support for these questions. Michael B.
Developer, Thanks for the discussion of image size, page size, and the relationships of pixel resolution and DPI. That does help clear up the issue somewhat. Too bad it is not more thoroughly discussed in the documentation. Can you explain why these files cannot be reviewed in Photoshop? Michael B.
Jonas and Brian, It is understood that EPS output is for the use of Postscript hardcopy output. The question you are asking is why would anyone want to bring an EPS file into an image editing program? The idea is to check the image prior to printing. Of course a…
#EPS file output
Message #152498
The R4 manual implies that the EPS file format output is compatible with the Adobe Systems language description. However, the EPS files I have produced from 3DS are not readable by Adobe Photoshop. I have also found that the IPAS routine that is supposed to configure the EPS output from…
David, Thanks for the tips on Fractal Painter and the PAR. Your generosity is very kind. I will be checking this out. The new animator pro should also be fun if they ever get it out the door. Michael B.
Yes, I will send you some samples tomorrow. I will have to dig a bit. Michael B. – Atherium Visions
Paul, I could provide you with a neighborhood of generic buildings arranged in blocks of streets. They are not realistic, just geometry, no maps. Is this what you have in mind? Michael B. – Atherium Visions

Message #148231
HI Alan, Thanks for your lucid report of CES. I hope you have a great and prosperous new year. Michael B.
Hi Paul, I have low res models of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, Transamerica Pyramid and Embarcaderos. Also much more. Give me a call or e-mail. Michael B. – Atherium Visions (415) 331-5127
Mine works so nicely I wouldn't trade it for any Matrox card. Super speedy in DOS and Windows. Let us know how it works in the Microns. Michael B.
Thanks Jonas, that confirms my conclusions. Michael B.
#Local Axis Orientation?
Message #146436
What is the best method to determine the orientation of an object's local axis? I ask this question because it seems that when using IK axis orientation can easily get changed and cause problems. Thanks, Michael B.
Hi Nik, Thanks for getting back to me on that file with the shadow problem. I had tried changing the bias settings but not that high and didn't see any changes. As it turns out I did render with ray trace but never understood what actually produced the artifacts. Thanks…
Thanks for the info Brian. I must have the manual around here somewhere. I know I have seen it. Sheesh, if I only had a brain. Michael B.
aawin.exe & scripts
Message #145018
Hi Brian, Happy New year to you too. Jonas referred my questions to you. >>Hi Jonas, Happy New Year. I have two questions about the windows animation player that you or one of your colleagues could answer. First, the RESIZE WINDOW option only seems to work when I "open" an…

Message #144977
Hi Jonas, Happy New Year. I have two questions about the windows animation player that you or one of your colleagues could answer. First, the RESIZE WINDOW option only seems to work when I "open" an animation from the "file" pull down menu. When I try to set up an…
>>Once you figure out how to use it… After much confusion with the documentation, and going back and forth with axis orientation, pivot placement, and linking (strictly respectively ), and thankfully, the sample files, I finally got it. Whew! I think you really have to want it. Then the price…
#Inverse Kinematics
Message #141615
I just completed my first project with the new IK add on and want to let you folks know that it worked out GREAT. Saved me so much time on this project. I was able to complete a 1000 frame sequence of a robot arm with 8 articulations doing precise…
My hat's off to you for trying, and to all the other programmers who built these tools. I draw the line when it comes to programming. I make images not programs. In fact as I read through the R4 manual I started to think that Yost when off to Planet…
While your at it figure out a way to automatically get the diagonal edge between two faces to come in with the edge invisible. Seems like the old AME models would come in without every edge being visible.
Brian, Thanks for the excellent tip. That camera rolling problem has stumped me more than once. The only other work around I have come up with is to extend the target point of the camera which minimizes the problem but doesn't make it go away. Your solution and explanation should…
Hi Gus, I was just catching up on this thread and wondered if the same would apply to a Pinnacle drive too? Michael B
Greg, Congrats once again to you and Gus for making new tools available. I am interested for sure and I also want to know how to get a copy of NDUMP to use with the PAR. Thanks Michael B.
I am aware that composer does prescaling but sometimes it just doesn't look as good particularly if other enhancements are being done to the text such as embossing, outlines, drop shadows, etc. It really depends on each particular situation and what looks best. Your point is well taken and thanks for…
In the absence of Inscriber and other video editing tools we make up things that …sort of work. Michael B.
To add a note to use of Composer, I find that if I use the largest font available then scale it down in several steps the antialiasing is even better. Just takes a little more time. Michael B.
I use the Colorado to back up and restore to PAR all the time. Just make sure that you set the PAR to output .ani files not .tga. That is in the "preferences menu." My biggest complaint is that the 250 is just way too small and way too slow.…
Drat, sorry I am going to miss this one. Last year's get together was a hoot. The old guy is sitting this one out. We home bound folks will expect a full report of course. Michael B.
At that point the distinction between VR and RR will have lost all of its meaning and we will be right back where we started, so to speak. What if we and this world we live in is somebody elses idea of virtual reality. Sort of like dropping the spores…
I have searched Hi and low for it and can not find it. Could you tell me which library it is in? TIA
Thanks for looking into it. Jonas did come up with a work around that is working. He suggested using the create/object/copy command. Then I centered the pivot on the originals and copies, got the original xyz from keyinfo and relocated with numerial input. (Please fix those scrolling object selection windows…

>>I wonder if others don't miss the tactile aspects Absolutely. My hands really miss working. A year or so ago I had a project designing an elaborate transforming table for a yacht. I designed it in ACAD 3D then rendered it in 3D Studio. The clients OK the design and…
