That would be 50 Alphas, although they are the not the new 300mhz one's but rather, the older 275's. Just goes to prove the theory that if the power is available, the user and the application will use it.
—>I remember the first time I heard anything about Amblin, they had 40 Amigas. They can replace those with one 300MHz Alpha.
That is true. Many Amiga enthusiasts were distruat to discover that places like Amblin and Foundation were dumping their Amigas for PC's and Alphas. When shows like seaQuest and Babalyon 5 used Lightwave, many Amiga people thought that they used it because these shows liked using Amigas. Many of them…
Hey Alan! How's it going down there! I trust you will be at siggraph this year. Drop me a line to let me know what you've been up to lately. Take care, Greg
—>Ok, that's it! =:-) I have had just about enough of this "put ILM on a pedestal" stuff! ILM does some fantastic stuff, true. But let us not forget the other companies out their that don't have the bucks to force-feed themselves to the public: PDI, Rhythm and Hues, Blue…
Hey Alan! I finally got my PC running CIS, so I'll hanging around here more often. I got your post about week or so ago about you comming up to this neck of the woods, did you get my post back? So how's going down there? Let me know what's…
Actually, we didn't build it wrong. The Voyager model is a second level metaform object. All of the ships detail is done without the help of maps. Maps only help to break up the surfaces and give additional detail as to bumps and surface irregularities. The model itself is closer…
The Star Trek Voyager model dosen't look all that bad though….. GT (Sorry Alan, couldn't resist… ) -Competition keeps everyone on their toes….
I haven't been around much latley, (freelance job eating ALL my time, including my planned trip to NAB….) antway, thought I would drop you a line to say hi. So who's it going? Wanted to thank you again for your hospitality upon my visit. Hope all's going well, and that…
Hey thanks alot for the good post. I'm glad you like the work that we're doing, and it just goes to show that one dosen't need to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get that tens of thousands of dollars look.
I'm probably going to visit my sister in the next couple of weeks. Why don't you E-mqail me your home phone number and we'll try and hook up. I'll bring our demo reel with me that has oll of our Voyager stuff done for the pilot as well as our…
Re- stand in for motion control model, Actually, the CGI Voyager is being used more and more as the visual f/x supervisors discover that they can get quick results and more dramatic shots than would ever be possible with a model. The easiest way to spot the CGI Voyager is…
The Alpha machines are very fast. Interestingly enough though, my Pentium system is only *half* as fast as it when raytracing. I can render 70K + raytraced texture mapped polygons in about 4 min on a Pentium, while the alpha does it in just under 2 min. Such benchmarks make…
—>All the particle systems stuff, like the gas wake and solar flares were done by Santa Barbara Studios as well, using Dynamation.
I'm thinking more along the waistline….. GT
The Voyager itself in the intro is a a combination of motion control model work as well as a full CGI mesh created at Amblin Imaging. Although all composited by SB Studios, the CGI Voyager was built and the elements rendered on PC based software at Amblin.
The Voyager object is a second level Metaform. It's comprised of almost 300,000 polygons with over 200 seperate surfaces. It's seen in the first, 3rd, and final shots of the VOyager opener each week.

–>John Gross: "More real test to come…." Grant Boucher: "More coming…." You guys spend too much time working together…. You're even beginning to sound alike. :^) Thanks! Keep On Toastin' Erik Flom – ELF Works 3D Construction Co.
Hey, nice hearing from you again Alan. I'm glad that you're obviously keeping yourself busy down there. I'm thinking of visiting my sister sometime soon. She lives in San Diego. Perhaps we could finally hook up. Talk to ya later. Greg
Thanks for the kudos. Actually, the shot where the Voyager flies over the asteriod belt was the real model though. Metaform is a modeling tool in the PC and Alpha standalone versions of LightWave. It's been a while since I've used 3DS, so I'm not real framiliar with the smooth…
Thanks, but we already have a maid…
Yep, they're using both. See my message to Alan for a more complete description of the shot which are ours.
Good to hear that the games are treating you so well. There is this game company upstairs from us called Naughty Dog, and they are using Alias Power Animator running on Indigo 2 Extremes to build 700 face polygon models! A little overkill IMHO, but hey, if money's no object…..…
Hey Alan! What's up out there! I'm still doing seaQuest, and it's as wacky as ever. We did however get ST Voyager as a client. We actually built a CG Voyager that is indistinguishable from the real model. So how's things down under in sunny San Diego? I'm looking for…

Message #151396
Anyone out there in the LA area have a PC PAR they want to unload? Having just purchased a Pentium system, I'm looking around to see if anyone has one for sale.
Thanks. GT

Oooooh! Dueling banjos….. Greg Teegarden Amblin Imaging "It's hard to believe grown-ups have to listen to this in the evening"
LightWave for NT will support the same 32 character extension line as the Amiga.
That's Payne, not payne. Or was it Pain? Dough!
Gee…. thanks for tip. I never would have thought of that one. Greg Teegarden – Amblin Imaging "It's hard to believe you work in the same building as I do."
What's that new tool called? Meataform? How does it work???
ScreamerNet will run render on a 486 based system running Windows NT. You'll have to trust me that it's faster than an 040. GT
Called ScreamerNet John, look into it. GT
It's only a rendering kernal, called ScreamerNet, and runs on any NT compatible CPU. It will be released with the standalone versions of LightWave and Modeler. A 486 running NT will able to render LightWave scene files. The only drawback is that you need alot of RAM for the NT…
LightWave rendering on a standard 486/DX2 66 is considerably faster than an 040/33 Amiga based system. This is especially true for FPU intensive tasks, such as raytracing. GT
Captain!!! GT
Enough on your plate huh? Remember, just say no to garnish. GT
My mom always told me, "if you can't say something nice…." GT
And Leo's getting larger… GT
Nope, you didn't misunderstand my post. It is somewhat of a pain having to babysit the Raptors when we have image sequences, but we usally use the Toaster rendering farm if we have composite shots or other sequencial images as part of a scene. Our farm consists of over 40…
Any animation you try and render that has an animated texture, -i.e., image sequence, will lock up after 60 or so frames. Same for sequencial bkg images. For some reason, the ScreamerNet software dosen't like image sequences as part of a scene file. That does not mean that it will…
Yeah well you know, this debate is still not over yet. Care to join? GT
The reason it takes five steps, if it's really that many, is because it has too many options. Thats really it's only shortcomming. Trust me though, if I had a choice between the two, I would pick 3D Studio! GT "On the white meat side of the building."
A "puplic forum"? Die-doo-know!!! One between your waist and your knees? GT
I'd rather see it running on the Indy myself…. GT
Hi Grant! Actually, Alias has a good animator module. It's problems arise from one having too many options and too much power for creating a scene. GT
Grant, Don't you know you should never give number out like that on a puplic forum? Everybody call him at work, quick! GT
Speak for yourself, I'm no grown-up… GT – Amblin Entertainment, er. Imaging -on the light-meat side of the building
You better start dialing…. GT
What do you want to know? GT
