#183750 New to animation etc Message #183892
Greg, >> How do I find out if 3D Studio is my answer and if not where can I get >> info on other 3D modellers / animators. Well, since you asked this question in the 3D Studio forum, people will probably tell you that is exactly what you need!…
#183433 ASOFT Party Message #183514

James, If you have access to the original drawing file or AutoCAD, I would just break the file up when the DXF file is created. Select entities when prompted and make several DXF files. Will this work for you? Bob W.
#182712 #No Floppies! Message #182738
Alan, Thanks for the suggestions. I believe that it was the controller, after all. I went ahead and took it to a local shop to see about trying a different (working) floppy drive, and for some reason everything was working fine down there. (of course!) I brought it back home…
#No Floppies! Message #182649
HELP! If any of you hardware experts out there can help me, I would greatly appreciate it! Earlier this week I was working on my system during a thunderstorm. We never lost power, but did have a surge or something as the lights went dim a couple of times. It…
Eric, when you're rendering you can select resize or tile for your background. It doesn't matter what size the image is originally, 3DS will automatically make it full screen if you select resize. Check under render/options probably… Bob W.
#177870 #Bitmap to Hemisphere Message #177913
Eric, Yes, I believe planar mapping will work. If your logo is a gif file for instance, start a new material with white for the lighting (ambient, diffuse, specular) use your GIF file as a texture map at 100%. Save this material under whatever name you desire. 'Voila, you should…
#177715 Bitmap to Hemisphere Message #177733
Eric, I'm just guessing here, but if you're trying to get the circular logo to cover the entire hemisphere, I would suggest using a flat rectangular mapping to just cover the hemisphere. Apply you're logo as a material, and size it so that it just reaches the edges of the…
#176238 #How to cut threads? Message #176340
John, >> Doing a surf rev would work, except threads are helical, not parallel >> "rings" James wasn't talking about doing a surf rev (in AutoCAD?), he was talking about LOFTING a cross section in a circular motion. I don't see why this wouldn't work or be accurate.
#175859 #Sob..Sob.. BACKUP! Message #175991
Chris, I've had that same problem (not being able to read old DAT tapes) however, in my case this happened without changing anything. I thought it was the tapes also. The actual problem ended up having something to do with the software or with a file called ASCSI.SYS or something…
#175337 Need urgent Advice Message #175439
Christophe, Macromedia Director is available for windoze now. They currently have a package deal going for about 1500.00 includes Director, Macromodel, Premiere and Sound Forge 3. Director alone is about 900.00 FWIW,
#174793 Photoshop won't work Message #174808
David, I've pretty much come to the same conclusion regarding memory. I'll just have to _try_ and keep file sizes small. I'll probably use composer more often also. Thanks for the input, Bob W.
#174632 Photoshop won't work Message #174644
Tyler, Thanks for the quick help. I've already deleted the photos30.psp file. (that info was in the manual). That didn't help. I never got around to figuring out what those numbers were. Now that I know, I will check on the sizes its giving me. Wish me luck! Thanks, Bob…
#Photoshop won't work Message #174621
Howdy y'all, I don't know anyone over in the Adobe forum, so I thought I would ask here first! I'm trying to use Photoshop 3 on a PC. I've got about 22MB of RAM available for Pshop. Whenever I use it however, I hear the hard drive being accessed constantly.…
Bob, If you go to the frames just before and after the ones you want to update and place a key there, won't that take care of your problem? For example, say you want to change frames 400-499. Go to frame 399 in the original version and place a key,…
Alden, The New England 3DS User Group meets in Boston at the Wentworth Institute. That's really not that far from Nashua. Ted Boardman is the BMIUG (Big Man In User Group) if you would like to talk to him. I don't have a phone # handy, but he lives in…
Tim, >> Boston last year, and it didn't seem to bad. The subways were clean >> and I never noticed anything that really put me off the city, except the >> drivers, that is (g). How true! I believe Mass. easily takes the cake for the most discourteous drivers! I…
#166208 #Modify or original? Message #166248
Tim, PMJI, but it sounds like you are either a professor or a student at my alma mater. (Can't think of any other reason someone would hang around in Carbondale!) We lived down there for 5 years while I went to SIU. I loved the weather and the surrounding areas…
#Forensic Article Message #165327
Alec, I just read the article in Photo Electronic Imaging about forensic animations. It didn't go into a lot of depth, but I thought it was a good article. I also just happened to see the CNET/FAA animation episode. Forgetting about trials and the law et al, I thought the…
#164486 #Chinalake prob??? Message #164571
David, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the site name has been changed to avalon.vislab.navy.mil Try that and see if you have any luck. Bob W.
#163611 unshown edges Message #163628
Tyler, If you have 3DS set up to display edges only, it will only show those edges that are facing you. If you make 'SEE THRU' active also, you should be able to see all edges. Hope this helps… Bob W.
#162458 #Forensic animator Message #162850
Rick, I've been in the process of starting a company for awhile. I've been doing mostly ACAD work though. My background is in architecture, so I'd like to do architectural modeling. I would just add forensic animations as an additional service. I am located in southern New Hampshire. Contacting experts…
#161891 #Forensic animator Message #162039
Rick, Thanks for the info. I've been using 3DS for about 3-4 years now. My background is in architecture. I tend to be very exact in many areas. My only background with computers is in using them! I can usually do anything I need to with/on my computer. The primary…
#Forensic animator Message #161778
Rick, I'm interested in forensic animations. I don't have any specific experience in this area, however. Can you give me some details about what I might be required to know in order to get started doing this type of work? Thanks. Bob W.
Ted, It looks like I'll be checking out the Diamond 64's. Thanks for the info. Now, if I could only get more 3DS work, and less ACAD work! Enjoy this weather while you can! Bob W.
Martin, I'll start checking out prices on the Diamond 64 cards. Regarding the ad using what may have been your model – I saw your model on the CD that shipped with 3DS, so you are probably right about that. Thanks again for your help. Bob W.
Martin, Thanks for your reply. And let me say that I hope the new job is keeping you busy and interested! Diamond does seem to be kind of a standard – have you had any (insurmountable) problems with them? You are one of a handful of people on this forum…
Jeffrey, You are definitely right about all of the hardware that will likely be changing once R5 is released. Since I am somewhat hobbled by my current card, it looks like I'll be upgrading soon. Any major changes are likely to be about a year away, so I'll have the…
Phil, Thanks for the input. Martin F. seems to like the Diamond stealth 64, so (of course) there is not total agreement here :-). Since I am somewhat crippled by my current card, I guess I'll have to look at upgrading soon.
I am considering upgrading my video card to something supporting a few more colors/resolutions. (I currently have an STB Powergraph 24) Does anyone have any favorite cards? How about any that should definitely be avoided? I am not looking to spend a bundle, so the really high-end cards are out…
#158469 Materials Editor Message #158566
Tim, In addition to what Ted said, just the fact that you have different lights in your scene from what the ME uses, will make a difference. Also, make sure that you have updated materials in your scene. (This will only apply if you change a material in the ME,…
#STUDENT UPDATE ALL-B Message #158146
From: Bob Weibler Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Pen Hardware March 10, 1995 4:01 AM
Please update me for all B segments. Thank you! Bob W.
Ana, Thanks for the additional info. I plan to stay away from MAC's, but I'm open to the Alpha machines! Bob W.
Alan, Thanks for setting me straight. Learn something new every day! Bob W.
Bob, Thanks for partially clearing that up for me! You're saying that when 3DS is written for NT, it will only be for the NT that works with Intel chips? Does this also mean that Krazy Ana is saying that 3DS will be written for the Alpha version of NT?…
Ana, >> Get an Alpha AXP as soon as 3DS for Alpha ships or get another >> Pentium board as soon as NT (which will be sooner, I guess) ship and >> instant multiprocessing. I was under the impression that NT would run just fine on any of the DEC…
Tim, >> In the Materials editor, is it possible to create a new material from >> one that already exists, and save it with another name Yes, simply PUT the material in the library. You can just hit the "P" key for this, and give it any name you want.…
Albert, PMJI, >> Just recall how effective the Graham-Rudman "thing" was. Well, I'm not sure what Graham-Rudman "thing" you're talking about, but it had (is having) a _MAJOR_ effect on the entire armed services of this country. Whether or not the results are for the good or the detriment of…
#156504 #label on trans. obj. Message #156534
Richard, You should be taking the NAAUG Telecourse 3DS2. This _exact_ effect was just covered. You need to use an opacity map with your decal. Bob W.

I expect you already know that it is quite simple to receive mail, etc with your CompuServe address? You didn't mention if you needed full access to all Internet sites for browsing or whatever. Enjoy your travels! (Feel free to come back up to Boston anytime 🙂
#155347 Odd rates question Message #155402
From: Bob Weibler Autodesk Multimedia Forum · Hware/OpSys/video February 24, 1995 1:50 AM
Thanks for the info. I haven't even started calling around for availability yet, so I don't know anything about discounted pricing. (no need to blush!) Since I haven't decided on a product yet, I'll check out the Autodesk product. Once I get more involved, I may be talking to Dick.…

James, Sorry I can't help on your question. You mentioned that you used GRASP. Is this Multimedia GRASP by Paul Mace software? I am considering purchasing this program. If this is the same program we are talking about, can you give me some personal insights? BTW, did you pay full…
#152002 Special Effects Message #152080
Andrew, I've never used KPT's, but from what I imagine them to be: XAOS tools has a program called Pennello, that will allow you to do all kinds of cool effects over any range of frames. If the program wasn't so _WAY_ overpriced, I would probably have a copy. (It's…
#151382 Demo Reel Message #151853
Chris, I believe that there has been a video out for the last 3 releases of 3DS. I can make a copy of at least two tapes to send you. My # is 603-772-0478 if you'd prefer to call. Let me know… Bob W.

Hi Frank, Just thought I'd reply to your message to set your mind at ease! The only dissasembly that I would be doing is "authorized maintenance" according to the TM for the weapon. I probably won't even have to separate the barrel from the stock (ie. the only dissasembly will…

Alec, Thanks for the reply – before I even had a chance to address a message to you! a few comments: >> Even if you can get the drawings for the 700, building meshes from a >> drawing is very difficult and unless you are extremely skilled at reading >>…
Kevin, It depends on how many hours you can spend on this each day. Are you an experienced 3DS user? I would guesstimate about a month if you're working on it fulltime and learning as you're going. You could probably cut that in half if you've got lots of experience.…

John, Well, I'm glad I got the right guy! Thanks again for the info. I'll see about sending a message to Alec. I'm also waiting on a reply from Remington, although the guy I talked to on the phone seemed like a d**k. BTW, the M24 is the military designation…
#Rifle mesh Message #150026

John, I saw (briefly) a message relating to my search for a model of a Remington 700 rifle. I believe the message was from you, but I'm not sure (could have been JNJ – or I could just be confused). Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I appreciated…
