Wait till you see Mach 1 FORTH from Palo Alto Shipping. (You can see it on a Mac now). It's REALLY quick! It compiles direct JSR (subroutine) linked code and uses inline macros for short words. Generally speaking, about twice as fast as conventional FORTH and about as fast as…

Great! now what do you do with it? (In direct query to C-A guys on this, there is NO way (other than a reset, alt-a-a) to get the KS area writeable). You will also find that DOS is in BCPL, with REALLY WIERD register usage and stacks that grow UPWARD…

Version 1.2 will be out in late October or early November. Or so saith those who survived the C-A "night of long knives". Developers are getting beta versions (with bugs) to help shake it down. Many changes in the DOS to get rid of brain-damaged seek routines and the like,…

I hate to bring this up, but have you looked into the copyright issue on music and movie sound stuff? The reason I ask is that several people playing with digitizing sound at FAUG were talking about it; apparently, the copyright laws are much better enforced on music & films…

Those of you who have Deep Thought (Alink) Version 2.30 (It seems to have come with the 1.1 Assembler and Lattice 3.03 C compiler) may have noted that there is a new switch called FASTER. You just put it at the end of the alink command line and Presto! the…

Well, OK then, how about if we slow them down??? I'll try anything. The only thing that makes me suspicious of your claim is that the Amiga takes a LOT longer to seek than the drives on a Mac (and the Mac drives seem to do so practically noiselessly). -Larry-

Is the Trackdisk.Device on the Kickstart disk or in the devs directory? I still disagree with your conclusion that it's hardware… the suggestion of putting sillycone glop around the business end of a high-density magnetical recorder mechanism sounds like the Jaguar/MG Solution to excessive oil consumption (use 80-weight oil and…
Bullroar, Jez. Stepper motors all have the characteristic that if you pick the stepping pulse rate correctly, it will step practically noiselessly. Faster than this, it misses steps. Slower than this, it makes a Full Stop (or nearly so) in between each step, causing lots of vibration –>noise. Actually, there…

I sorta thought that DiskEd couldn't read KS. What is needed is a REALLY low-level routine that seeks to a given PHYSICAL track & sector. Or maybe a way to read KS into RAM (Hmmm Does DiskCopy DF0: RAM: work?). Anyway, there is nothing wrong with the drives other than…

I believe that (you didn't type the 1> part) prog-name is launched as a sub-task of the CLI. However, the program can open its own windows, etc. This can be demonstrated with (say) ED. If you say ED , you get a new window which can be shrunk till you…

Interesting. Apparently, there was a pretty good crop of "early adopters" that pushed sales…

Unfortunately, the portability hit the Amiga between the eyes. Guys who have been disassembling the code are appalled– no optimization at all. Really sucks rocks. And the guys that are complaining about disk wear from CP schemes oughtta think about a disk scheme that splatters files all over the disk…

Anything that makes a DOS call must be a PROCESS, not a TASK. This is because CreateProc() sets up a more elaborate control block (TCB) that DOS uses. Lots of folks are having this problem. Apparently, you can do the TASK things on PROCESSES (Like set priorities, etc). This area…

Jez- I tried BOTH 1.0 and 1.1. (The assembler is 10.178 in both, but Alink got promoted from 2.20 to 2.30). I wanted to see an assembler listing to try to figure out what all got hauled in (including maybe two funcdefs). I thought at first that Assem was SLOW!…
Assemble with the line: assem sourcefile.name -i includefile.name -o objfile.name -c W100000 to set the workspace to 100,000 bytes (or whatever). Also, if you get an assembler crash, the problem is stack space. I found that one trying to get a listing of argoterm (STACK 8000 works). I have problems…

There are some syntax differences between Lattice 3.02 and 3.03. The program was written for 3.02. Michael Mounier (the author) hangs out here and he can tell you exactly what they are (it's not a large change). G AMIGAFORUM -LarrySorry, hit wrong macro key!

MVP Forth is real slow. Glenn Tenney (the author) whipped it up just to allow people to "play". There is very little support for the Amiga goodies, though there are "hooks" in there for some of them.
