Message #191582
To All, I was unable to attend SIGGRAPH this year due to project deadlines, I assume there was a video again this year. Is it possible to get a copy? Jimbo 73321,1324 or: jimbo@jbink.com
I Need to find work!!
Message #184457
Danno, PMJI, but if you can't find someone to create you "zoo" models I would be more than happy to offer my assistance. I've been using 3ds since R1 for both video animation and architectural applications. Let me know your timeline and budget, let's talk. Jimbo
#Bones VS Skin
Message #177501
To All, I need to redo a 30 second spot of a character animation that I originally did as just a complex 3D model and animated joint by joint. Should I buy Bones Pro or Skin or put my checking account on a diet and go "Skin and bones"? Any…
Jonas, Duh, Duh, Duh, I switched machines and didn't have my par in the map path. Shesh, it's time for me to start the weekend early. Thanks, Jimbo
#MakeIFL from PAR
Message #168389
To all, Could someone remind me how to use makeifl.exe with my par drive? I tried the following: makeifl jumpfinl jump 0 216 this makes an IFL in the 3ds directory (which is in the map path) but when I render the anim I get the error "can't find jump0000.tga".…

Paul, I will go look for your upload right now. If you have time and don't mind, I'd like to check out the map if you want to upload it. BTW how is business over there? I'm planning to re-enter the freelance market again real soon. Just need to find…
Hey Paul, Long time no type! I need a basketball map for a project, could you tell me what you found for yours? Thanks, Jimbo
Materials, how to orgnz?
Message #157824
To All, I'm sure you all have the same problem that I have — where and how to store the multitudes of textures collected over time for use in all of my 3DS models? I'm interested in how anyone else handles this situation. I have just backed-up over 250MB of…
Doug, PMJI, go with pcAnywhere, I've been using it for a month or two and it seems to work fine. Jimbo
James, When I need to put .FLC's out to tape, I use my PAR and 3D Studio. I just render a empty (no model) animation with the FLC set as the background image and background set to "rescale" (rather than "tile") in the render setup menu. This will work perfectly…
Tyler, I am running the tablet with the mouse drivers (if I run with the DGPADI driver I cannot see the cursor). How do I know if I am configured for "relative" mode. I also tried the "scale tablet" button and didn't see any change other than the normal lights…
Tyler, Thanks for your help, I'll give it a try. Jim
Kurta XGT config?'s
Message #140543
To All, I'm having problems configuring my new Kurta XGT 6×8 tablet and cordless pen. When I use the mouse driver it will allow the cursor to move on the screen but only in a limited area (unable to reach the pull-down menus to change area). when I use DGPADI…
Greg, Thanks, I look forward to seeing it. For now I'll just add a batch file to my video post entry that deletes the ndump.tmp file after rendering is complete. Jimbo
#Ndump.tmp deleted
Message #139932
Gus, Has there been an upgrade to NDUMP.BAT that will delete the NDUMP.TMP file in the c:\3ds\net directory? Sometimes when one animation in the render que finishes and another one begins the PAR doesn't record the last few frames and when the next animation starts to render the NDUMP.BAT file…
David, I'll give it a try and see what happens! Thanks Jim Beyer
#View render que from Dos
Message #139900
To All, I am able to access my netowrk at work from my home pc via pcAnywhere. I would like to check the render que for failed machines and rendering times, etc. I currently just look at the log files for each job. How can I "clean" failed machines and…
John, Thanks for the help, I'll give it a whirl. Are you in Omaha? I thought I saw that in a thread some time ago. I'm located in Des Moines. Jimbo
Jeffrey, Thanks for the info, I'll try both suggestions and see which works best! Jimbo
#mach32 card and Vibrant
Message #139136
To All, My new Pentium 90 just arrived and I'm having trouble configuring 3ds to use the Mach32 graphics card that it has in it. When I run "3ds vibcfg" and try to choose the ATI MACH 32 IT isn't listed. Why is that? Is the MACH 32 not supported?…
Dos to Par in Par?'s
Message #133083
When I am in the PAR trying to import 3DS tga files, I cannot see them on the listing. I can change back and forth from drives to files but no files come up on the list. What's up with that? Any ideas? I am using beta version 1.30.
#PAR join problem
Message #131481
To All: I am unable to do a "JOIN" on my PAR! When I pick join, a window opens with my current animation listed as #1 and then when I try to choose another animation, nothing happens (no matter where I click) until I cancel out of "JOIN". I have…
Download problem
Message #131468
ALL, It seems like lately when I am downloading (retrieving) files from this forum that my machine locks up if I tell it to disconnect when finished. Anyone else ever have this problem? Jim Beyer
#Globe w/mapping
Message #131466
Kouros, I like what I see. Does the Earth (w/stars and moon) model have an "earth-like" texture map that I could use? It's hard to see due to the lens flare. Did you use any kind of distance cueing or blur on the stars? I re-created your clouds over planets…
Thanks, I'll check… Jimbo
#Globe w/mapping?
Message #131181
To ALL, I'm looking to download a model of the world with realistic textures and mapping. Clouds and atmosphere as well. The globe on the CD-ROM isn't quite realistic enough. Any (free/low cost) ideas? Thanks in advance…. Jim Beyer
Paul, Sounds good. Have a good weekend! Jimbo
Robb, Wow, been there, tried that…! We fought this for some time (just as you have it sounds) and the answer the way it was explained to me is that the super black created in 3DS is only for use with video post options. > If you find a way…
3DS books?
Message #129465
To All, I have seen mention here on the forum regarding the following 3ds books: "3D Studio Special Effects" "3D Studio Tips and Tricks" "Inside 3D Studio" I checked at my local Barnes and Noble book store and they only found "Inside 3D Studio" to order. Does anyone know where…
Paul, PMJI, but hey how are you doing? I am about to buy a Kurta XGT 6X8 cordless, have heard good responses from other 3DSers. But I won't know until it gets here and I try it out. Jimbo in Dsm PS. I thought you were just modeling wrists for…
Don, I did a cake once by pre-building the "slices" and lofting them and then using a combination of texture and bump maps, made the frosting show some depth. This approach worked well because we didn't have to fliy too close to the cake in the animation and it still…
Jack, Thanks for your help re: the ATI GUP! Jim
Alex, PMJI I am about to order a machine with one of these cards in it….should I be aware of problems with it? Jim Beyer
PMJI, when you say "low cost", how much is that? Thanks, Jim Beyer
If the end result is just an image of the graphics you've created why not just render them to a high resolution file with a null display and have the file shot directly to film at a service bureau, that's what we do and the results are great.
Bob, Thanks alot for your help. Looks like this will do everything that I need. Where are you located at anyway? Jim Beyer
Remote access
Message #128094
Bob, When you access 3ds from home, do you have a hardware lock there or on the machine at work you are accessing? Can I get around the hardware lock at work (I only have so many to go around)? Is there another way to access the render queue from…
D. < I use a remote IPX netware shell and log in as a client to the lan from home. My server thinks I'm connected locally, as does my PC, just that I am painfully aware of the 14.4 speed at times. The application (Remote Office from Stampede Software, $99)…
Bob, Thanks, you've been a big help! Jimbo
Bob, thanks for the reply. When checking on renders, are you able to bring up the network queue control and view logs of animations and such? I think this is all the information I would need to access remotely. Also, can you work on a model at home and add…
#Remote access to PC
Message #127501
To All, I'm buying another machine for home and would like to control my machines at work with something like "Close-up" or "Carbon Copy". These packages allow one to dial up a remote machine and run it as if I were sitting in front of it. Anyone out there doing…

#Best cordless pen?
Message #127326
To All, I'm adding another pentium to my small "render windowbox garden"(farm) and would like to add a digitizer with a cordless, pressure sensitive pen. Any recommendations on Wacom, Summa, Kurta, other? Any source of expertise out there in this area? Thanks in advance… Jimbo
James, greg answered your question. I use the NDUMP routine with on a Lantastic network of 5 machines and only rarely have problems with it. NDUMP allows each machine to render a frame and then store them temporarily on a hard drive until they can be dumped out to the…
Greg, Thanks, you'd think after using 3DS since ver. 1 I wouldn't need help with such a no-brainer See ya Jimbo
Jonas, Thanks for the info, since you're on a roll, do you know why when I render to my PAR using NDUMP i lose any background image or color (just renders all frames with a black background)? Thanks, Jimbo
