#5951 slow printing Message #5972
Just noticed something today… SCREEN REDRAW is v-e-r-y slow with The Font Company's Caxton, whereas it's rather quick with your Tiffany-clone. Has anyone seen this problem with other TFC faces? (NB: When ordering fonts from TFC, you must EXPLICITLY ask for the AFM files.)
I think you directed your message to me by mistake.
I still haven't had any problems using MGXPS.DRV with CD. As for documentation on MGXPS.DRV, my sadly out-of-date notes are still on MSAPP forum…
1. If you use a ASCII text file (e.g., Xywrite, Volkswriter), you can use a search-and-replace program (e.g., Steve Terry's PUBTOOLS). 2. You can use macros in your editor to put the codes directly in the file. Create some fractions in VP and open the file in your editor and…

I'm a print media consultant. You might say that I'm the David Garth of print. Most recent campaign was a council race (primary) in NYC in September. I concentrate on my clients' communications (i.e., what they should say, who they should say it to, how they should say it), rather…

Certainly what you've written about screen fonts confirms much of what I've read on CIS. Has anyone documented WHY screen fonts get messed up in PM?

Yes, I'm a designer. My company is called Nostradamus Advertising (it's a long story…). In addition to straight design, we do some political consulting, marketing consulting, and the like.

Go to EDIT:PREFERENCES in PC PageMaker, not the Control Panel. Also try asking on ALDUS or MSAPP forums.

I enjoy dialogue with someone who cares about precision and about esthetics yet is not unhappy about living in the real world…

For starters, you might look at "Scientific Advertising" by the late Claude C. Hopkins.

Defining "good typography" will be harder than you anticipate. First you'll have to define "good". We spent a good part of Freshman year in college just working on the idea of "good". It's not that I always agree with you, but you didn't deserve some of the shots you were…

Every time I think I know something, WHAM! Regarding the IBM line drawing characters, I was relying on the technical information in Adobe's FONT & FUNCTION. If, however, I had read the very *next* sentence, I would have seen: "Letter Gothic, Prestige Elite and Orator contain the IBM line drawing…

Let me be the first to stick up for you and say… Thanks for cutting through the bullslip! I think some of the latest typographic fancies look GREAT. But that's just my own taste, and it may or may not be in the best interest of my client. Every honest…

Quality type may be part of a quality image. And, in that fashion, it may even boost sales. But I have seen no proof that it improves readability, legibility, recall, recognition or readership.

The popular Micrografx WIndows PostScript driver can translate an AFM to its own native WFM metrics file format. Ventura can translate an AFM to an intermediate VFM file and then to its native .WID table format. WIndows apps using the standard (Aldus?) PostScript driver get their character widths and kerning…

1. Once you've created a PS file, it's platform-independent. So you could post your message in a forum or section appropriate to the originating app. 2. As for you AFM question, it porbably has to do with different encoding schemes. The "Real World PostScript" book has some interesting information about…

If your application has the feature, try setting the "stretch above" or "raster above" to a higher number.

Just FEAR, Bill. Fear of missing a deadline. Fear of looking like a jerk. Fear of sending in a big expensive linotronic job and having it come out wrong. So I test test test!

Kingsley/ATF released and then withdrew their fonts sometime in 1988. They expect to be ready to release improved versions in March 1989 for MAC and June 1989 for IBM. Call 1-800-289-TYPE for literature. Ask for Cheryl.

No $%^##"!? Thanks to you, we've pretty much got our MAC to IBM port done. But so far have no way to create screen fonts. Do you know of anyone who has successfully created GEM or WINDOWS screen fonts either from a Fontographer-created PS font or from a MAC screen…

Try asking Scott Leyes 71041,121 on this forum. I saw some stuff he wrote hereabouts that seemed real informative.
