The AVT stuff is a lot of fun – especially here. We live on the shore
(well, close to) Fort Peck lake, which (the lake) takes up about 150 by 200
pixels on my monitor, without zooming in a sat image. I can tell if there's
a storm on the other side of the lake, how fast it's moving, and the size
of it (using infrared images).
The HAMs send SSTV images, which are color, lores images back and forth all
over the world. I just watch… the unfortunate link to being the inventor
of the most effective transfer mode is that operating means I get to answer
questions, instead of talk about pictures. It gets old (he whined). But I
monitor almost all the time.
I got a little wooded trophy for my SSTV designs from the HAMs at the
Dayton HAMFEST one year… "Technical Achievement of the Year". Now, that
felt pretty nice. :^) Unfortunately, because the Amiga isn't exactly a
mainstream HAM machine, the AVT system isn't all that widely distributed.
There are about 800 of them out there, which isn't so bad considering the
number of HAMs (2 million).
