The Aztec (oops, not Inca, Jack… they were a few miles south) stuff in the
entire Valley of Mexico is being slowly corroded, much like the artifacts in
Egypt. Last time I was at Teotihuacan, the ceremonial centre just outside
Mexico City, it was obvious that the contaminants were destroying the remining
bits of the plaster and painting that had been recovered, sometimes almost
intact, on walls and surfaces. Either my eyes are much worse, or the colors are
fading and the mortar is crumbling.
I found that smoking a nice cigarette in that city was like a breath of fresh
air… sort of pre-empted the gunk in the atmosphere. <g>
