Yes, universities REALLY have to think about these things these days. Our
motivating factors are 1) We do a fair amount of audio CD premastering – at
$several hundred dollars each to turn a DAT into a 1630 master, we can save a
fair amount of money. and 2) The university is investigating storing archival
data on CD rom – rather than paying someone to do it, we could do it ourselves.
Our estimate is that it would pay for itself rather quickly. I have now
investigated several CD plants and found only one that will take the PMCD
(premaster CD to drive their glass mastering equipment). Others will take it,
but simply transter it to 1630 tape and charge a fee for the transfer.
