Denny: you can just put the bitmap picture in the background and then put text on top of it. The only reason for putting a picture on top of text and using the transparent nature of white pixels on non-Postscript printers was to overlay pixels of one color on text of a different color. (There were a couple of other reasons you may have wanted to do this but we have a few new features that make those reasons obsolete.) It is very important to maintain full WYSIWYG compatibility. We just can't allow the screen representation to differ from the printed output, especially when people pay $10 a page at an imagesetter and then learn that bitmaps aren't transparent to Postscript.
