<<"Narrowcasting" so that individuals can create and distribute their own program material, within an office, down the block or across the world.>> Patrick. Mr. Media 100 surfer dude. Hi. Desktop pub enabled books, magazines, and newsletters; true (although arguably xerography had more to do with this). But the consumer has had the ability to make and distribute video for years. The camcorder is everywhere and everyone owns a VCR. But few consumers can 'concept' (let alone make) movies even THEY think are interesting enough to watch. That is why your mail box isn't stuffed with tapes from your adoring friends and relatives. There is a problem. The industry (and public) still defines video as having something to do with 'broadcast-type' products or programs. The music video, headline news, and perhaps the interstitial are the only truly new forms broadcasters have shown us since 1965. Even wedding videos mimick old industry forms. <<digital video systems (such as those from Data Translation, Avid, Radius, ImMIX) are now giving creatives access>> Yeah, but these are really cost saving measures. And this is how you all explain your benefit to your clients. "You can do the same old stuff for lots less." Evolutionary, but so narrow it won't translate to the consumer market (because the consumer, even tho he has the technology, doesn't make and distribute video programs today). I am curious what Data Translation, a comparative heavyweight in the DTV area, envisions consumers will do with a Media 100 rig, Patrick. How would this change our lives?
