In searching for a home based Hi8 editing solution I would agree with your
comments in general. But also it's worth noting that several users of
Miro's DC1 on MULTIMED forum have reported adequate resolution with this NLE
system that they're now doing all their editing this way were as they
formerly did it with a tape based system. The out is said to be nearly
indistinguishable when compared to a direct copy from a Hi8 source to SVHS
tape. There are some motion artifacts in action shots. I'm sufficiently
convienced to give it a go. The DC1 is only $600 but the hidden costs is
computer hardware, especially hard drive size and speed. Tim's PC with more
hd should handle this nicely. The total cost would be in line with a single
Panasonic 1970 or Sony EV-S7000 editing deck. That's a decent entry fee.
