MMU is what seperates the Mini from the Micro, kind of. For a multitasking computer not to support it in the operating system is to flirt with the guru, and CBM knows it. One of the most important functions is to set up protected areas of memory for each running task so they don't "stomp on each other" or write in one another's memory areas. Also, at one time it was in the guidelines that CBM would never sell a non MMU machine and third party developers were told not to use EC parts. This is just a cost reduction move and a pretty dumb one that locks us out of ever getting a more stable operating system.
