I'm tacking onto your message since I missed peter's original post.
I found an XGA driver a while back that provided VESA support and worked well
with AniPro. I just checked and found the following:

Library: 3 Video Utilities
This claims to provide VESA and SVGA compatibility on XGA and XGA-2 graphics
adapters.
