David, If you set the jumper on the Series I so it WON'T AUTOBOOT, sure you can use it as just a RAM card. That is what I'd do, if I added a replacement controller sans memory. I had a Series I for a long time, it worked OK but did give me some problems with termination, but so does the Series II I have now. I don't think it is an isolated problem with the GVP cards, most controllers are termination finicky, 'cept for my old KRONOS card. I think the tooltype info I gave you should work with HDToolbox. I tried it again just to make sure and it does work. You can also download the software FastPrep from the GVP BBS.
