If I may break in here…

That's something I've been pondering lately. All of this 24-bit realtime
stuff is interesting, but except for computer generated rendering,
everything that either goes into or out of such a system will eventually
enter the analog domain. Even the rendered stuff eventually goes to
analog tape, at least until digital tape or some other media takes over in
all of the hometown cable stations.
I think that having a single-frame deck now is not really a disadvantage
for later. The quality and durability that is by definition built into
such decks is bound to be an asset for quite some time, and that applies
to all areas of video production, not just recording frames from disk.
Know any SFRs that don't have a use for other purposes? Know any truly
good editors that can't SF?
It's kind of interesting that all of the non-linear solutions today don't
usually mention anything about what has to be done to get the data into
and out of the machine; they're just really big on what you can do to it
in the interim. I think (IMHO) that the source video and the final
product are going to be seen on the 'standard' formats like Beta SP and
such for quite some time to come.
Passe, maybe. But valuable devices for right now and a long time to
come.
