Andy,
sounds strange! I may be misunderstading you but here's a possible trick. If
you have 147 seperate objects you could take the first one and create 3
keyframes for it: frame 0 out of view of the camera, frame 1 centered in the
camera view, frame 2 out of view of the camera (same as 0 if you like). Then do
object/ copy tracks/ from this firt object to every other (hit the H key and
tag all the other objects). Then go into the track info and slide the 3
keyframes to a unique frame number for each successive object:

object147 146 147 148
If you are following me correctly each object will appear in view for one frame
and then disappear. You could render this one file and get a sequence of
numbered .gif files. This is the fastest way I can think of other than creating
147 seperate .3ds files and doing a huge batch file with a line for each.
