Inclined to agree, in the UK we have seen the demise of CDTV on the Amiga and
the Philips CD-i is really no go, although I believe that plans are afoot to
upgrade the image and improve marketing etc.
To be brief, take the worldwide figure of installed CD-Rom drives an then ask
the question what will the standard be?
Take VHS & Beta on video, Beta was superior in technology but VHS became the
standard, because of the amount of available titles. Generaly speaking it is
true to say software sells hardware. Software development, by anyone on a
commercial basis means profit, how much are we going to make..? This is why
CD-Rom although not as advanced as 3DO and others, because there are so many of
them installed in PC's throughout the world, no one can afford to ignore it..
I have missed out many more pertinent facts and areas that influence these
things but basicaly I agree with your comments and for anyone who is not sure
what choice to make, certainly medium term CD Rom XA would not be a bad choice.
Lastly, Sega / Nintendo, I would be prepared to bet my life's savings that this
current Fad for Consoles and Super Mario et al, will diminish into nothing in
the next year or so. Just like Teenage Turtles, Ghostbusters, and Skateboards
before them.
There will ALWAYS be a base of people who want the added ability of a keyboard
and a processor – computers.
