For the most part, I contend this is not a valid analogy. In the tape world,
the tape had to be all Beta or all VHS. In the CDROM world, a single disc can
be Mac _and_ DOS _and_ Windows, so the issue of platform concerns fade into the
background. In fact, it was not publishers who lost big in the Beta/VHS
battles. It was hardware developers, and specifically those who developed
additional peripherals beyonfd the vcr, like cameras, editors and the like.
Publishers should put concern about platform issues well down on their list of
worries, unless they are considering spending a lot of money on a platform that
offers no leverage and small sales (CD-I comes to mind). Hitting the market
with millions of hardware owners is increasingly easy.
