David, I work for the U.S. Library of Congress. LC has some public access CD-ROM workstations which are connected to a local area network. Public users can access a variety of CD-ROM titles which are mounted on the network's CD-ROM server, which is NOT in a public access area. Users can export data from the CD-ROMs to floppy diskette for off-site reference. Also, users can only access the workstation through a menu (no DOS commands). This minimizes the risk of virus infection. This arrangement seems to satisfy all involved. Users have access to some important databases without a lot of effort on the part of the reference librarians or computer technicians.
