#CDROM for Library
3 messages in this thread
David,
I work for the U.S. Library of Congress. LC has some public access
CD-ROM workstations which are connected to a local area network. Public
users can access a variety of CD-ROM titles which are mounted on the
network's CD-ROM server, which is NOT in a public access area. Users can
export data from the CD-ROMs to floppy diskette for off-site reference.
Also, users can only access the workstation through a menu (no DOS
commands). This minimizes the risk of virus infection.
This arrangement seems to satisfy all involved. Users have access
to some important databases without a lot of effort on the part of the
reference librarians or computer technicians. If you have any further
questions, I shall be glad to reply to them.
Phil
Phil, Are you aware of what LC facilities are available to remote users?
Or would you know whom to contact? Thanks, Jim
Phil,
What kind of CD LAN setup is LC using? i.e., we're trying to decide how
best to CD equip our LAN (Novell) and seem to have narrowed our search
between SCSI Express and OPTI-NET. I'd be interested in knowing have LC
configured things up.
Tanx for sharing …
