As far as I know Autodesk is trying to make .3ds format the standard exchange
file format for 3d programs. I'm not an Autodesk fan and I don't know what
information can be stored in 3ds format, but from my point of view it's a
better solution than extending DXF, a format not made for 3D and hated by
anyone who has to write a DXF import filter.
Spline objects are already the standard in high end programs and they will be
coming strong in the future (in all other programs). I know very little about
the structure of spline objects, but I guess they are harder to convert
between different programs.
